Jann Arden in Halifax

Revisiting the 90's with the Mixed Tape tour

As May came to a close, Jann Arden returned to Halifax for what appeared to be a sold-out night at the Scotiabank Centre. From the moment she stepped on stage, it was clear this wasn’t just another stop on her tour. Some artists simply perform, but Jann Arden connects. And every time she visits, she somehow manages to sound even better than the last.

Decked out in a series of sparkling, rhinestoned costume changes, Arden launched into her setlist for her Mixed Tape tour, serving as a loving nod to Gen X and elder Millennials who once poured their hearts onto carefully curated cassette compilations. She spoke fondly about the magic of the ’90s — a time when music felt like a lifeline — and then brought that era roaring back to life through a thoughtfully chosen set of covers and originals.

Her setlist paid tribute to iconic Canadian voices, including a heartfelt Bryan Adams cover, before pivoting into a breathtaking rendition of Chris Isaak’sWicked Game.” It was one of those moments where the room seemed to collectively exhale, reminded once again of just how powerful Arden’s voice truly is. Effortless, emotive, and unwavering, she commanded the Scotiabank Centre.

Between songs, Arden shared stories from her touring days in the ’90s and reflected openly on the love she holds for her late parents. These moments never felt rehearsed or performative, instead landing like conversations with an old friend. At times, it felt less like an arena show and more like being invited into her living room, listening to stories while music filled the air. Her warmth is disarming, her humour effortless, and her sincerity unmistakable.

Midway through the final chorus, Arden stepped back and let the crowd take over, standing quietly as thousands of voices carried the song forward. It was a powerful reminder of how deeply her music has embedded itself into people’s lives. The night closed with “Good Mother,” a song that has grown alongside so many of us.

Before leaving the stage, Arden took a final moment to speak directly to the crowd, urging kindness, compassion, and responsibility; reminding us to be good mothers to one another, to be strong allies, and to protect trans kids and the entire rainbow community. It was a message delivered with clarity, conviction, and heart, and served as a fitting close to a night built on connection and care.

Closing Thoughts
