Wheatus In Vancouver: A Trip Down Memory Lane

Okay, so let me paint you a picture. It’s a nearly sold-out night at The Pearl, and Wheatus In Vancouver is about to celebrate 25 years of their debut album. Brendan B. Brown, Matthew Milligan and the rest of the crew came in with something that felt immediately different from your typical concert experience. Instead of just running through a setlist like clockwork, they handed the reins over to the crowd. Letting Vancouver decide where the night went. And you know what? That move made total sense because that’s just synonymous with how Wheatus are. Wild, alternative, and stupidly catchy in the best possible way. Speaking of catchy, you already know “Teenage Dirtbag” never really left us. It’s been living rent free in millennials’ heads since 2000, and TikTok gave it a whole second life that helped fuel this very tour. So yeah, we have the algorithm to thank for this one.

The Setlist

21-tracks deep and not a single dull moment. The self-titled album got plenty of love with “Leroy,” “Wannabe Gangster,” and “Truffles” all making appearances. But the night wasn’t exclusively a nostalgia trip. Deeper cuts like “You and Your Stoopid Guitar,” “Fourteen,” and “Desperate Songs” showed up too. Which the real fans absolutely ate up. The covers though? Chef’s kiss. Wheatus clearly did their homework because they pulled out Rush’s “Time Stand Still” and The Tragically Hip’s “My Music at Work.” Which, if you know your Canadian music history, you know that went over incredibly well in Vancouver. Green Day’s “Basket Case” also snuck in there and the reaction was massive.

Then came a moment that honestly had everyone cracking up. A few fans started yelling out “Christmas Dirtbag” during requests, and Brendan just looked out at the crowd and went “I know your game, you just wanna hear Dirtbag twice.” The place erupted. That kind of banter is what separates a good concert from a genuinely great one. It stopped feeling like a show and started feeling like hanging out with a band that actually likes being there. It was intimate.

The Finale

All night people were hollering for “Teenage Dirtbag” and, weirdly, also telling Brendan to take his shirt off. Vancouver proved they were something else. But when that final track finally kicked in, the room absolutely lost it. People were jumping, screaming every single word, completely locked in together. The energy throughout the night had been great, but this was something else entirely. It was the kind of finale where you look around the room and everyone’s just in it. Walking around Vancouver after the show, fans were still buzzing, still talking about it, still riding that high. Wheatus in Vancouver was the kind of night people are going to bring up for years.
