The Scotiabank Saddledome had a killer lineup to coincide with The Calgary Stampede this year including A$AP Rocky. He played to a sold out crowd and brought the dome down. Despite technical issues midway through the show, Rocky was able to give the crowd what they came for, a show filled to the brim with energy and electricity.

A$AP Rocky

Calgary’s Scotiabank Saddledome was completely sold out for the A$AP Rocky show, with people crowding together in the stadium, hungry with anticipation for the internationally known rapper to perform. His show is unique, it starts with Rocky fully immersed in the crowd on the floor, allowing his fans to surround him as he performs his first few songs. From the very start it is more than just a show, but rather a spectacle of perfection in performance.

You would think that after performing on the floor surrounded by fans Rocky would simply go up to perform the rest of his set on stage, but that’s where you’re wrong. He appears above the crowd from a helicopter dangling from the ceiling of the stadium, with a megaphone microphone in hand while dancers dressed in SWAT uniforms fill the stage below him. The concert is more than just a concert, it is art. By the time Rocky makes it down to the stage there’s still half a show left to go, and it is hands down one of the best performances I’ve seen at the Saddledome.

At one point during the show there were some power issues — from what I’ve gathered via rumours online one of the fuses at the Saddledome failed and the power that was surging through the stadium was from their backup generator (though this is all speculation). Rocky was not one to wait for the power to come back on, performing freestyles to pass the time, and eventually going down and immersing himself in the crowd once again. After about 10 minutes of waiting for the power to come back on, Rocky said “My energy is fuckin’ off right now, give me a minute to catch a breather. I’m pissed the fuck off and I’ll be right back,”. When he returned to the stage after a few minutes he somehow topped the performances of his earlier songs, giving the audience exactly what they came for: a high energy, no holds barred A$AP Rocky show. I would love to see Rocky come back to town again, but let’s hope that the Saddledome can get it’s fuses in order beforehand.
