We Are Story Tellers
Apocalyptica In Vancouver was an electrifying experience unlike any other. Eicca, Perttu, Paavo, and Mikko brought their Play Metallica Vol. 2 Tour to life. The Queen Elizabeth Theatre was packed with eager fans, ready for a night of symphonic metal. The band delivered a 13-track setlist featuring Metallica’s greatest hits, reimagined through cellos and drums. The atmosphere buzzed with energy as metalheads filled the venue. Fans headbanged, sang, and lost themselves in the powerful music. Each note blended classical precision with heavy metal intensity, creating a mesmerizing sound. The cellos screamed with distortion, perfectly capturing Metallica’s signature riffs. The night was packed with unforgettable moments and surprises, starting with the electrifying opening set was a special guest.
From the moment the lights dimmed at 7:30 PM, jaws dropped in awe at a special introduction. He goes by many names—Mankind, Cactus Jack, Dude Love—but you might know him as Mick Foley. Mick was in town for his “FIRST BLOOD” wrestling event the night before. However, his main reason for being on stage was personal. He officiated Nita Strauss and her drummer husband, Josh Villalta’s wedding in 2024. Since he was in town, he wanted to give a bombastic introduction to the band. Seeing one of my wrestling heroes live was surreal. I couldn’t help but fan-girl at the unexpected moment. What was probably one or two minutes felt like mere seconds. Foley, dressed in a tie-dye shirt straight out of Dude Love’s wardrobe, radiated warmth and excitement. He expressed deep gratitude for Nita’s incredible artistry before welcoming her to the stage. With that, Nita Strauss made her grand entrance.
Rocking her signature red Ibanez, Nita Strauss stormed onto the stage with unstoppable energy. Katt Scarlett (keys), Johnny D Young (rhythm guitar), and Josh Villalta (drummer/husband) followed, ready to leave their mark on Vancouver. The band delivered a tight six-track set, igniting the crowd with every note. Each musician played with precision, their presence undeniable. Tracks like “Mariana Trench,” “Digital Bullets,” and closer “The Wolf You Feed” stood out as fan favorites. The stage belonged to them, every movement commanding attention. Villalta flipped drumsticks midair, while Scarlett whipped her long hair to the beat. Nita’s shredding was effortless, a masterclass in technical brilliance. Her legendary resume speaks for itself—Alice Cooper’s guitarist, Los Angeles Kiss’ in-house musician, and now a bandleader in her own right. This performance felt impossible to top, a relentless display of skill and passion. Yet, somehow, it was only the beginning. The night was building toward the otherworldly experience that was Apocalyptica in Vancouver.
Apocalyptica in Vancouver was a dream come true for any fan of Metallica and orchestral music. Like every Metallica show, the night began with Ecstasy of Gold—the perfect walk-in anthem to ignite the crowd. As the track reached its peak, fans rose from their seats, singing along in unison. The moment had arrived. The band took the stage, lightning striking as they launched into Ride the Lightning. From the first note, the audience erupted like thunder, applause echoing through the venue. The energy was contagious, pulling me into every iconic riff and thunderous beat. Headbanging along, I lost myself in legendary tracks like Enter Sandman, Creeping Death, and Master of Puppets. Every member radiated joy, interacting with the crowd and each other effortlessly. Their chemistry was undeniable, each musician elevating the other’s performance to new heights. A major highlight was Mikko Kaakkuriniemi’s masterful drumming. Matching Lars Ulrich’s aggressive style is no small feat, but Mikko made it look effortless. His precision and power kept the show surging forward, driving the audience into a frenzy. As the final notes of Seek & Destroy rang out, fans roared for an encore. The band returned with One, a heavy hitter that left the audience in shambles. Though Metallica wasn’t on stage, the sheer intensity made it feel no different. With the final bow, Apocalyptica passionately thanked Vancouver for an unforgettable night. As fans poured out of the theatre, a sense of pure joy lingered. This wasn’t just a concert—it was an experience, one I’ll be counting the days to relive.
I want to thank Apocalyptica In Vancouver and their team for allowing me to witness and capture all the insanity that was the Play Metallica Vol. 2 Tour.
