We Are Story Tellers
The much-anticipated night finally arrived as Avril Lavigne brought her greatest hits tour to Ottawa. Accompanied by Simple Plan and Girlfriends as the opening acts, the concert promised to be a nostalgic ride through the iconic pop-punk sounds that defined an era. For someone like me, who has followed Avril and Simple Plan since their early days, this was a night I had been eagerly waiting for.
The evening started with a bang as Girlfriends took the stage. Admittedly, I wasn’t familiar with the band, but I was curious to see what they would bring to the table as the opening act for such a legendary tour. Girlfriends didn’t disappoint. The band, a three-piece ensemble, delivered a raw, energetic performance that perfectly captured the essence of the early 2000s pop-punk vibe.
Frontman Travis Mills brought a contagious energy to the stage, engaging the audience with stories of perseverance and chasing dreams. His interaction with the crowd was genuine and heartfelt, making it clear that Girlfriends are not just another band but a group with a story to tell. As a photographer, I always appreciate a band that gives me plenty of opportunities to capture dynamic shots, and drummer Nick Gross made it easy with his animated performance. Girlfriends set the tone for the night, leaving the audience pumped and ready for more.
Next up was Simple Plan, a band that has been a staple in my playlist since my teenage years. Despite listening to them for so long, this was my first time seeing them live, and my excitement was through the roof. The opportunity to photograph them from right up front was the cherry on top.
Simple Plan delivered a high-energy performance that took me back to the days when their songs were the soundtrack to my life. Frontman Pierre Bouvier was a powerhouse on stage, utilizing every inch of it to connect with the audience. His enthusiasm was infectious as he jumped around, encouraging fans to sing along and get hyped. It was clear that the band was thrilled to be back in Ottawa, and they made sure everyone knew it.
Hearing my favorite Simple Plan songs live was a dream come true. The band’s performance was flawless, but I must admit I was a little disappointed to miss Drummer Chuck Comeau’s crowd-surfing moment after leaving the photo pit. Nonetheless, the experience was pure bucket-list nostalgia.
As the lights dimmed and the opening notes of “Girlfriend” filled the air, the crowd erupted into cheers. Avril Lavigne emerged from the darkness, and the energy in the arena reached a fever pitch. It was clear that the audience was ready for a night of reminiscing and celebrating the queen of pop-punk.
Avril’s stage presence was nothing short of electric. She commanded every inch of the stage, her band backing her up with the kind of tight, polished performance you’d expect from seasoned professionals. The setlist was a journey through her extensive catalog of hits, with early favorites like “Complicated” and “Sk8er Boi” taking fans back to the early 2000s.
The stage design and visuals were on point, perfectly complementing the vibe of each song. Avril’s performance was a reminder of why she’s still considered the pop-punk princess after all these years. Her ability to connect with both new fans and those who have been with her from the start is a testament to her staying power in the music industry.
Avril Lavigne’s Ottawa stop was more than just a concert; it was a nostalgic trip down memory lane for fans of pop-punk. Simple Plan proved they haven’t lost their edge over the years, delivering a performance that was both fun and energetic. Girlfriends were a pleasant surprise, bringing a fresh yet familiar sound that fit perfectly with the night’s vibe.
For me, the night was a reminder of why I love doing what I do. The relationships I’ve built with fellow fans, photographers, and musicians make nights like this even more special. Seeing Avril Lavigne live was a dream come true, and I couldn’t have asked for a better lineup to make that dream a reality. If you ever get the chance to catch this tour, don’t hesitate – it’s a night you won’t forget.
