We Are Story Tellers
Monday nights are made for rocking as Bastardane and OTTTO took the Park Theatre stage in a frenzy. The Reconquest Tour feature the sons of Metallica members, Castor Hetfield and Tye Trujillo as they tour with their respective bands. Even though both bands are rooted in Metallica’s lineage, they stay authentic to their coastal influences, Bastardane hailing from the East and OTTTO from the West. It was exciting to see what both bands had to offer the Winnipeg crowd as it was their first appearance in the central Canadian city.
The influence of West Coast music can be heard in their performance of ‘My Pain’. Listening to the song live is reminiscent of the early 2000s surfer and skate culture which OTTTO nails perfectly in both the music video and their live performance. Embedded within the heavy bass lines, and continuous headbanging are funky grooves that refresh the pace and melody of the music which can be heard through their set.
The high energy of the band translated directly into the crowd as Tye Trujillo continuously jumped up and down the drum riser. I continuously had to anticipate when he was going to do a high-flying maneuver as I wanted to catch it on camera. Unfortunately, the one jump I did manage to capture was a vertical frame with Tye out of frame.
On another note, the band has also debuted their new singer, Tito. Tito came out of the gate controlling the crowd with his strong vocals and stage presence. A debut signifying the start of OTTTO’s growing and everchanging wave within the metal scene.
The stage was set for Bastardane to take over with commanding use of high-gain riffs followed by powerful chords making the Park Theatre stage alive on a Monday night. This was followed by Castor’s heavy-hitting drum performance keeping the energy high throughout the night. Castor was highly engaged with the crowd ensuring that everyone was having a great time.
Their style of hard rock resonated well with the crowd as it offered a different taste which complimented oTTTo’s performance. The amalgamation of each of the band members’ influences is evident in their non-stop, high-tempo and energetic performances representative of the East Coast rock and metal scene.
The evolution of rock and metal can be seen in this generation as a new chapter turns in the form of new faces with familiar names. Change is inevitable however, I am excited to see what comes next for Bastardane and OTTTO.
