We Are Story Tellers
Halifax was given an extra special treat on Sunday evening with the return of Canadian country rock legends Blue Rodeo for their “30 Years of Five Days in July” tour. Marking the 15th time, they’ve played the Nova Scotia stadium. Forming in 1984 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Blue Rodeo has gained international recognition through their 16 studio albums and upbeat story telling songs, that venture from ex-girlfriends to looking for UFOs in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.
Saturday night was no exception, starting the night off with their hit song “5 Days in May”. Stating that they’re planning to play the entirety of “Five Days in July”. Telling the story of each song made you feel like you were living through their experiences with every song. Singing alongside Jim and Greg was Canadian singer Melissa McClelland, who helped harmonize the two of them beautifully, also including some intimate duets throughout the night. A beautiful duet to highlight was their song “Dark Angel” which was performed by McClelland and guitar player Greg Keelor who in the past shared the same song with another Canadian Legend Sarah McLachlan. The audience sat in silence and listened to the duo’s beautiful voices as they filled the near-sold-out Scotiabank Center.
After a quick intermission, Blue Rodeo came back on to play another 9 songs, including a cover of Lee Hazlewood’s song “The Railroad”. As they finished their hit “Hasn’t Hit Me Yet” the night came to an end, the band left the stage to a celebrating crowd which insinuated another appearance and resulted in a 3-song encore before officially ending the night. A special night to say the least, Blue Rodeo put on a show like no other, Haligonians were more than pleased with the concert they had just experienced. I hope to continue to see Blue Rodeo return to Nova Scotia for years and years to come.
