We Are Story Tellers
The second night of the Burt Block Party 2024 in downtown Winnipeg was a high-energy affair that showcased some of Canada’s most exciting live acts. With the Arkells headlining a stacked lineup featuring July Talk, The Blue Stones, and local favorites The Haileys, the stage was set for a night of rock and roll, dynamic performances, and unforgettable moments. Winnipeg’s Exchange District was once again transformed into a haven for music lovers, drawing an enthusiastic crowd ready to embrace the festival spirit.
Opening the evening was Winnipeg-based band The Haileys, who brought their indie-pop sensibilities and infectious energy to the stage. Though the crowd was still gathering, The Haileys wasted no time in making an impression. Their shimmering guitars, punchy rhythms, and catchy melodies instantly set the tone for what was to be a memorable night. Frontwoman Hailey Danzker’s clear and emotive vocals soared across the block, drawing in passersby and early attendees alike. Performing tracks from their latest EP Sunshine in the City, The Haileys balanced upbeat numbers like “Echoes” with more reflective tunes such as “Time Will Tell,” showcasing their versatility as a band. The chemistry between the band members was palpable, with tight musicianship that allowed them to shift between groovy, danceable moments and introspective indie rock ballads.
As the sun began to set, Windsor, Ontario’s The Blue Stones took the stage and immediately turned up the intensity. The duo, made up of Tarek Jafar on guitar and vocals and Justin Tessier on drums, delivered a performance that was nothing short of electrifying. Known for their gritty, blues-infused rock sound, The Blue Stones didn’t waste a second in getting the crowd amped up, opening with the explosive “Shakin’ Off the Rust.” Jafar’s powerful guitar riffs combined with Tessier’s thunderous drumming to create a sound that was much bigger than you’d expect from a two-piece band. Their synergy was undeniable, with each song building on the last in a carefully crafted setlist designed to keep the energy high. Tracks like “Black Holes (Solid Ground)” and “Grim” showcased their ability to blend blues, rock, and alternative elements seamlessly, while their tight, hard-hitting performance kept the crowd fully engaged.
Next up was July Talk, a band known for their theatrical live performances and the magnetic chemistry between co-lead vocalists Peter Dreimanis and Leah Fay. The moment they hit the stage, it was clear that July Talk was here to deliver something special. Dreimanis’s gravelly, commanding voice paired with Fay’s ethereal, often playful delivery creates a dynamic that is unlike anything else in the Canadian music scene. Their back-and-forth banter, both musically and physically, added a layer of drama to the performance that kept the audience on their toes.
The lighting and stage design added to the moody atmosphere, with stark contrasts of light and shadow mirroring the band’s sonic landscape. Fay, known for her captivating stage presence, frequently interacted with the audience, climbing onto barricades and dancing with fans, further blurring the line between performance and experience. July Talk once again proved why they are one of Canada’s most exciting live bands, delivering a performance that was both theatrical and deeply personal.
As the headlining act, the Arkells had a lot to live up to, but from the moment they took the stage, it was clear they were ready to bring the house down. Known for their high-energy performances and infectious, anthemic songs, the Hamilton-based band turned the second night of the Burt Block Party into an all-out celebration. The Arkells immediately had the crowd dancing and singing along, setting the tone for what would be a non-stop, feel-good set. Frontman Max Kerman was a whirlwind of energy, running across the stage and engaging with the audience at every opportunity. His charismatic presence, combined with the band’s tight musicianship, made for a performance that was as joyous as it was musically impressive.
The setlist was packed with fan favorites, from the nostalgic “Knocking at the Door” to the rallying cry of “People’s Champ.” The Arkells’ ability to blend rock, pop, and soul influences into a sound that is uniquely their own was on full display, with each song offering something new while still maintaining the band’s signature anthemic quality.
But the party wasn’t over yet. The Arkells closed their set with an extended version of “My Heart’s Always Yours,” complete with a horn section and a massive sing-along from the audience. As confetti rained down and the band played their final notes, it was clear that the Arkells had not only delivered an incredible performance but had also created an unforgettable experience for everyone in attendance.
The second night of the Burt Block Party 2024 was a triumphant celebration of music, community, and connection. From The Haileys’ indie charm to The Blue Stones’ gritty rock, July Talk’s mesmerizing theatrics, and the Arkells’ high-energy party, each band brought something unique to the table, creating a night that had something for every kind of music fan. The Arkells, as headliners, delivered a performance that was both fun and meaningful, embodying the spirit of the Burt Block Party—a festival that brings people together through the power of live music. As the crowd dispersed into the Winnipeg night, the feeling of unity and joy lingered in the air, a testament to the magic of live performances and the lasting impact of great music.
