We Are Story Tellers
The Chaos and Carnage tour hit Montreal like a freight train, bringing with it a lineup that spanned continents and styles, all unified by one thing: sheer sonic intensity. With four distinct bands each delivering powerhouse performances, the night was a celebration of metal in its most theatrical, progressive, and punishing forms.
Australian six-piece Ne Obliviscaris delivered a four-song set that felt like an odyssey. Known for their progressive compositions, the band wove intricate passages of classical-inspired metal, highlighted by the haunting beauty of their live violinist. The contrast between their clean, melodic vocals and aggressive instrumentation created a truly transcendent soundscape. Their performance leaned heavily into material from their latest album, Exul, released on March 24, 2023 — a record that continues to push the boundaries of modern metal.
Next, Italy’s Fleshgod Apocalypse transformed the stage into a gothic opera. Having seen them previously on their fall co-headlining tour with Shadow of Intent, it was no surprise they brought their signature theatrical flair. A grand piano, candlelit ambiance, and antique wooden mic stands gave the set an almost baroque atmosphere. L’Olympia, with its ornate decor, proved to be the perfect venue to amplify their cinematic presence. Their blend of symphonic death metal was both brutal and beautiful.
For fans of gothic black metal, Cradle of Filth delivered an unforgettable performance. With corpse paint, elaborate costumes, and a mic stand made of hanging skulls and bones, the visuals were as intense as the music. Dani Filth’s unearthly screams pushed the limits of vocal expression, making it one of the most extreme sets of the night. Though not everyone’s preferred subgenre, the full house at L’Olympia proved their enduring legacy in Montreal’s metal scene.
Closing the night were the death metal titans themselves, Dying Fetus. Returning to Montreal for the second time in a year, they tore through their set with the precision and aggression only a veteran trio can bring. No frills — just pure, relentless brutality. The crowd fed off their energy, and the pit never stopped moving. As the final notes rang out, it was clear that Dying Fetus had once again cemented their status as kings of carnage.
The Chaos and Carnage tour wasn’t just a show — it was an experience. One that left ears ringing, necks sore, and hearts full.
