Chelsea Grin Rocks a Sold-Out Show in Montreal

Montreal’s death metal community showed up in full force for one of the most anticipated shows of the year — Chelsea Grin headlining a sold-out night at Beanfield Theatre. With a stacked lineup of heavy hitters including Disembodied Tyrant, Signs of the Swarm, and Shadow of Intent, the energy was unmatched from the very first breakdown to the final encore. A night of crowd surfing, growling vocals, and blistering riffs, it proved once again why Montreal continues to be a hotspot for extreme music.

– Disembodied Tyrant –

Kicking off the night was Missouri’s Disembodied Tyrant, returning to Montreal for the second time in less than a year. Their last visit saw them open for Shadow of Intent and Fleshgod Apocalypse at L’Olympia, and they brought that same intensity back. The vocalist started their set sans guitar, only to pick it up for the second song, layering in heavy rhythms beneath his guttural vocals. Their sound struck a unique balance between melody and brutality, with the guitarist pulling double duty — delivering both blistering solos and deep, guttural screams. An excellent warm-up for the chaos ahead.

– Signs of the Swarm –

Next up, Signs of the Swarm took things to another level. The Pittsburgh-based deathcore outfit had the crowd in a frenzy, encouraging nonstop crowd surfing and igniting the pit. Photographers scrambled to avoid airborne fans as the band unleashed their brutal set. Having played Montreal four times in just two years, their connection to the city was obvious. Their 2024 single “IWONTLETYOUDIE” hit especially hard live. With a spot at Spain’s Resurrection Fest this summer alongside Slipknot and Judas Priest, they’re proving themselves to be one of the genre’s most exciting acts.

– Shadow of Intent –

Shadow of Intent followed with a jaw-dropping performance rooted in technical precision and unrelenting heaviness. Hailing from Connecticut, the band co-headlined a tour last year with Fleshgod Apocalypse, sharing the stage then — and now — with Disembodied Tyrant. Ben Duerr’s vocals were in a league of their own, combining deep growls with rapid-fire delivery that commanded the room. Their orchestral reimagining of 2022’s Elegy, released in 2024, added a layer of sophistication to their brutal style, showing their music can appeal to both metalheads and classical purists alike.

– Chelsea Grin –

Headliners Chelsea Grin delivered the final knockout blow. The legendary deathcore band from Salt Lake City packed the venue wall to wall, with fans pressed shoulder to shoulder and crowd surfers stacking up at the barricade. Their setlist blended classics with newer material from their 2023 album Suffer in Heaven, showing that even after nearly two decades, they’ve still got plenty of fire. Their stage presence was fierce, the energy was electric, and the love from the crowd was undeniable. A sold-out night for a reason — this was deathcore at its finest.
