We Are Story Tellers
Cigarettes After Sex In Vancouver was a night of enchanting mystery as this El Paso based “Dream Pop” trio brought their X’s World Tour to Rogers Arena. The tour was in celebration of their latest album aptly named “X’s”. The experience of the show as a whole was unique and something unlike anything I’ve attended before.
As the doors opened at 6:30 PM, eager fans poured into the arena, buzzing with excitement. By 8 PM, rather than launching into a typical opener, Cigarettes After Sex surprised the crowd with a captivating video montage featuring their music. This unexpected choice left some newcomers puzzled, adding an air of mystery to the evening. For the dedicated fans, however, the video intensified the anticipation, creating a palpable energy that made the ground feel like it was vibrating with their excitement.
Cigarettes After Sex’s video montage wrapped up at the 45-minute mark, leaving fans with 15 minutes to brace themselves for the moment they’d been anticipating. As the lights dimmed, the atmosphere shifted; rather than the expected thunderous cheers, an enveloping ambiance filled the arena. I was immediately taken aback, as the concert had taken an unexpected turn. The stage, cloaked in darkness and illuminated only by soft, ambient light, set the scene as the band members entered one by one: Randy Miller on bass, Jacob Tomsky on drums, and finally, frontman Greg Gonzalez.
To my surprise, the show unfolded at a slower pace than I had anticipated. Typically, a venue like Rogers delivers a bombastic, explosive experience, but Cigarettes After Sex offered something much more distinctive. Screens showcased each band member against a black-and-white LED backdrop, displaying both the band and atmospheric visuals that perfectly set the tone for the night. Fans throughout the arena were captivated, immersed in a heavenly, dream-like ambiance. With smiles stretching from ear to ear, it was evident that for many, this was one of the best nights of their lives.
With an 18-track setlist, fans were treated to many of the band’s greatest hits. Favourites like “Cry,” “Sunsetz,” “Sweet,” and “K.” made memorable appearances, while newer tracks “X’s,” “Tejana Blue,” and “Dark Vacay” from their recently released album were beautifully woven into the mix. Over the course of roughly 90 minutes, Cigarettes After Sex wasted no time, delivering everything fans had dreamed of and more.
As the night unfolded, it built to a crescendo, with Greg frequently engaging the audience and even personally handing out guitar picks. Another standout moment was when a disco ball descended from the centre of the arena, casting shimmering light across Rogers Arena and creating an awe-inspiring spectacle.
Throughout the show, I kept asking myself, “Am I not in on the joke?” Out of curiosity, I did some research afterward and discovered that I indeed wasn’t. The band had a “Concert Etiquette” page that quickly gained traction among fans. One key-note was the request for no yelling or screaming, which helped me understand why the audience felt so distinct from typical shows at the venue.
The group’s aesthetic is defined by a minimal, chic, and melancholy vibe that exudes empowerment. Their commitment to only black and white photography and videography acts as a cohesive thread that sets them apart from many other bands in the dream-pop genre.
Nearing the end of their set, Cigarettes After Sex began playing their largest hit, one with 1.4 billion streams alone on Spotify, “Apocalypse”. Rogers Arena was electric, with fans passionately singing along to every lyric, some even moved to tears; it was a mesmerising sight. As the encore track “Opera House” played as an exit song, fans left the Arena with tears in their eyes and excitement in their hearts. They had just experienced pure joy, leaving with the bittersweet realisation they might not feel this way again for a long time.
What began as a night of utter confusion transformed into a profound understanding: this wasn’t about epic scale or explosive energy, but rather a deeper emotional connection. In just 90 minutes, Cigarettes After Sex in Vancouver turned me into a fan, and it was clear why so many considered this a perfect performance, a night to cherish forever.
