We Are Story Tellers

Cityfolk Fest 2022 – Day 5 is in the books with some fantastic music and a stand-out performance from the masked man himself Orville Peck

Tré Burt

Tré was born in Sacramento, California and his musical style is often compared to the likes of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and John Prime. Tré is currently signed to John’s record label. Burt comes out on stage and tells a quick story about how he was close to not being able to play. He had forgotten his festival pass and security would not let him in. If it wasn’t for a fan asking for a photo, he doesn’t think he would have made it back in.

With just him and his guitar on stage and his feel-good attitude, you know right away that it’s going to be a great show. He starts to play and with his soft and soothing voice, he brings you in with every stroke of the guitar. Telling little stories in between his sets, you really feel connected and fully engaged with everything he says. With his big smile and music that makes you feel good, it’s no surprise to see him rocking the stage at FolkFest.

Whitehorse

Up next, we have Whitehorse. Whitehorse is a Canadian rock band, composed of husband and wife duo Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland. Whitehorse played a show in Nashville the night before, hitting the stage at midnight, and still made their flight to be in Ottawa to hit the FolkFest stage on time. Even though the airline lost some of their gear, nothing was stopping these two from playing! By the time the first song ended, you can tell it’s no wonder why these two won the Juno award for best adult alternative album.

With little sleep and lost luggage, Luke and Melissa are all smiles and positive energy, Luke shredding the guitar while Melissa slaps the bass. Whitehorse has such a great stage presence you can’t help but to tap your feet, nod your head and move! There’s a reason why they have been playing together for 12 years. Their love for music really shines through with every note they hit!

Orville Peck

Closing out night 5 and returning for his second appearance at the Folk fest is Orville Peck. If you are not familiar with him, he is a South African country singer who wears a mask covering his face at all times and has never shown his face in public before. With his unique style of fashion and his very deep voice, you are instantly drawn to the stage and cannot keep your eyes off.

With his deep and powerful voice, it is hard not to fall in love with every strum of every note and every word he says. Orville has this massive energy he gives off and the crowd feels it and gives it right back. Orville has a stage presence like no artist I’ve seen before. When he sings it’s more than singing he is giving his heart and soul into what he’s singing. Even though what he looks like underneath that mask is a mystery, what isn’t is we know Orville Peck is a fantastic musician. He keeps you engaged the entire time and didn’t slow down. Orville Peck is possibly one of the best live acts you’ll ever see, do not miss out on the chance to see him!
