We Are Story Tellers
Last weekend, an East Coast kitchen party hit Le Studio TD with a bang as Classified brought his “Welcome to the Maritimes” tour to Montreal. The final stop on the tour featured multiple East Coast artists, showcasing why the region has earned its stellar reputation for producing great music.
Toronto-born and Halifax-raised, O-Sound kicked off the night with an electrifying hip-hop set that had the crowd buzzing. Performing a selection of original tracks, he ignited the energy in the room, perfectly setting the stage for the night ahead. The mix of Quebecois and East Coast fans responded enthusiastically, a testament to his ability to connect across diverse audiences.
Cape Breton native Brett Matthews followed, delivering one of the most memorable sets of the year. The up-and-coming country artist captivated the audience with his heartfelt songs that flowed effortlessly through the room. His cover of City and Colour’s “Comin’ Home” was a standout moment, especially when the crowd passionately sang along to the line mentioning Nova Scotia. Matthews’ performance radiated authenticity, and it’s clear he’s destined to thrive in the music world.
For me, seeing JRDN perform was a full-circle moment nearly two decades in the making. I vividly recall watching him sing at an open mic at my local library as a kid, long before his career took off following his MuchMusic debut. He performed his hit “Magic” alongside a selection of other fan favorites, showcasing the immense talent and hard work that have defined his 20-year journey in the music industry.
Juno-nominated artist Ria Mae took the stage next, delivering one of the evening’s standout performances. The crowd erupted with excitement as she performed a mix of new tracks and older favorites, singing along to every word. A special moment came when she mentioned her time living in Montreal, earning her an extra warm reception from the audience. Although her set ended earlier than expected, she promised to return for the next act, leaving fans eager for more.
Closing the night with a triumphant return to Montreal after six years, Classified brought the house down. He expressed gratitude for his tourmates and the fans, reflecting on what he called an incredible journey. Diving into his setlist, he thrilled the crowd with classics, including his iconic track “The Maritimes,” complete with a live accordion intro that emphasized his East Coast pride. The front row, packed with fellow East Coasters, sang along with every word, creating an unforgettable connection with the Juno-winning hip-hop star.
