We Are Story Tellers

Down With Webster In Vancouver

July 24th was a night of nostalgia as Canadian Rap/Rock artists Down With Webster In Vancouver hit the Commodore Ballroom stage for the first of two sold out shows. The tour was in celebration of the 15th anniversary of their hit album Time to Win Vol. 1 and along for the ride was opener DJ CHIP$ (Chelsea Reneé).

DJ CHIP$

As someone who’s seen plenty of DJ’s open for shows, I’ve got to say CHIP$ was among the best. The set was nothing but hit after hit of 90’s-00’s tracks that included the likes of Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Eminem, Smash Mouth, Panic At The Disco… The list goes on. DJ CHIP$ wasn’t alone in her performance as alongside was incredibly charismatic hype man DA WRECKAGE. WRECKAGE’s exuberant performance perfectly blended with the music and electrified the audience. As CHIP$ phenomenal set came to a close, a collective sadness could be heard, as the past 40 minutes felt like “The Perfect Playlist” and an experience of pure bliss.

Down With Webster

As the lights dimmed and frenzy began, Toronto based group Down With Webster kicked off with a track that truly describes the performance I’d witnessed; “One In A Million”. The show was a high-octane journey through the band’s discography with classic hits, “Time to Win”, “Big Wheels”, “Rich Girl$”, “Chills” and even a surprising cover of The Prodigy’s “Invaders Must Die”. Each track was met with roaring applause and even though the venue felt blazing in heat, it wasn’t enough to stop fans from dancing and singing along to every song. MC’s  Cameron Hunter and Martin “Bucky” Seja incredibly fast paced energy made it astonishing to see every other member on stage keep in unison without skipping a beat. One standout moment from the show involved a drum machine solo by Andrew “Marty” Martino, which playfully incorporated “The Super Mario Bros” theme which was met with glee and acclaim. Nearing the end of the set, fans eagerly awaited a particular song and with only four notes on a keyboard, an uproar released as infectiously addictive track “Your Man” began.

During the final performance of the night “Whoa is Me”, there was a connecting moment between Webster and fans. As Webster  raised a flag containing their logo, an immediate sea of W’s were met from the fans signifying the love and support they’d still had for this band after all these years. With dynamic performances, engaging stage presence and an incredible setlist, it’s clear Down With Webster’s reunion was an admirable success and one that has us all hoping we don’t have to wait another 10 years to see these awe-inspiring performers again.
