First Listen - “Drum Show” - Twenty One Pilots
First Listen – “Drum Show” – Twenty One Pilots release their second single, “Drum Show” from their upcoming album, Breach, dropping on September 12th. Breach is the final conclusion album to their long running conceptual story which started with their album Blurryface. However, according to lead singer Tyler Joseph, “Drum Show” doesn’t connect to the storyline, prompting fans to experience it simply for what it is.
The title alone makes it clear that ‘Drum Show’ highlights drummer Josh Dun, giving fans insight into his perspective. In an interview with BBC Radio, Dun explains that the song reminds him of teenage angst and venting frustration. He compares it to drumming on a car’s steering wheel, when music feels like the only way to release emotion. The song’s lyrics suggest this is about a time in Dun’s life before he was in Twenty One Pilots. Living a mundane life and working normal jobs just to get by, music was and still is his emotional release.
“Drum Show” sounds a lot more punk than most of Twenty One Pilots music. This is mostly due to the percussion-heavy instrumentals and Dun’s frantic drumming. The drums build steadily as the music progresses, carrying emotional depth. In the second chorus, Dun joins Joseph on vocals for the first time in Twenty One Pilot’s history. He repeats the lines “I’ve been this way I want to change” into the bridge. Joseph’s classic screams then layer over Dun’s vocals, leading into the outro, leaving a strong impression.
“Drum Show” blends intensity with vulnerability. As a long-time Twenty One Pilots fan, it’s exciting to hear more from Josh’s perspective. This single is setting the stage for Breach as an emotional turning point for the band. It only makes sense that at the same time of the release, the band has announced that this will be their final tour. This is a bittersweet moment for fans as they are happy for the duo’s time off, but will miss seeing them perform live. As the band steps back from touring, “Drum Show” serves as a powerful snapshot of their journey, both musically and personally. It is a reminder of why fans connect so deeply with Twenty One Pilots through their honesty and fearless emotional expression.
