First Listen - The Giver - Chappell Roan: The Midwest Princess’s Country Debut
First Listen – The Giver – Chappell Roan’s debut country song finally came out last week. Fans have been eager for the song’s release after Roan performed it live for the first time as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live. This is a risky move by Roan, considering her fans are definitely not the archetype for this genre. However, this ironic one-off country tune absolutely delivered.
Redefining Country Music
Chappell Roan gets very playful with this track, it is meant to be fun and not taken too seriously. The intense fiddle and banjo playing at the start sets the tone for the rest of the song. It’s loud, it’s campy, it’s queer country, and I love it! The way Roan takes the genre and molds it to fit her style is seamless. The lyrical brilliance of talking about pleasing a woman better than any man on a country song is incredible, and so unapologetically Chappell Roan. It has an early 2000s Dixie Chicks and Shania Twain sound that gives it a nostalgic feel.
Fans Divided
I’ve seen several mixed reviews from fans, some love it while others hate it and think it lacks depth. I believe this song may just not be for everyone. Not many of Roan’s fans would be considered country lovers, as a matter of fact, many detest the genre. Understandably, considering many of her fans are a part of the queer community. Historically, queer folks have not been represented or welcomed in the world of honkey-tonk. But that’s what I think makes it so great. Even with just a one-off song, Roan is reclaiming the genre as a queer artist.
What’s Next for Chappell Roan?
First Listen – The Giver – Chappell Roan is a tour de force of clever irony. I am thrilled that the bona fide midwest princess took a chance with this genre. Though this doesn’t mean Roan is transitioning to country, I am interested to see if it will influence her future work. I’m excited to hear her next releases and highly anticipated second studio album.
