We Are Story Tellers

"Hall Of Fame" Worthy Performance From The Script

Charisma & Interaction

The quartet hailing from Dublin, Ireland gave an electric sold-out performance at the newly revived Brooklyn Paramount. The band’s charismatic lead singer Danny O’Donoghue took to the stage in a leather overcoat and the crowd was engaged immediately. It was clear from the start that this was a group who performs for the fans. From the moment they started playing the 2014 hit song “Superheroes” through the end of the night, O’Donoghue walked back and forth constantly showing love to and interacting with as many parts of the crowd as he could reach. The other members of the band, Benjamin Sargent on bass, Ben Weaver on guitar and drummer Glen Power, although they don’t have as much freedom of movement, were equally as enthusiastic from their spots on stage and seemed genuinely happy to be there. I was situated directly in front of the drums for a few moments and caught Powers with a big smile many times.

Noteable Moments

O’Donoghue explained to the crowd that the band is actually touring with P!NK at the moment, and that they are feeling grateful to have this night to perform a headline show for NYC. There were lots of moments throughout the night that proved this to be a wholly “The Script” show. Before performing the song “Nothing”, O’Donoghue explained that he used to Facetime his ex girlfriend on stage during the song. He asked for someone in the crowd to video call their significant other so he could sing it to them instead. A fan handed him her phone with her boyfriend on the line and the singer was sure to point out that the boyfriend was saved as a contact under “Sperm Donor”. O’Donoghue, along with the rest of the room, got a real kick out of this. He explained the situation over the phone and referred to the fan as “your girlfriend, or soon to be ex girlfriend” because the song he was about to sing is in fact about a breakup. Another fun moment was during “Paint The Town Green” where each band member brought out a drum to bang on along to the lively song which made for a super spirited audience response and sing-a-long. The lead singer even brought his drum into the pit so fans could join in and bang on the drums along with the band.

Overall Impression

I left this show full of energy. Much of The Script’s discography is nostalgic for me and I found a renewed sense of enjoyment getting to experience their music live. This feeling was clearly shared because even the security guards were singing and dancing along to some of the setlist.  As a photographer, it was probably the most well lit show I have ever documented, as a reviewer I have no notes, and as a fan it was just a wonderful show. The band ended the show with an encore of their 2012 track “Hall of Fame” and the venue was on fire. Brooklyn Paramount is a beautifully renovated space and I’m glad to have enjoyed it for the first time at this “Hall Of Fame” worthy performance from The Script.
