We Are Story Tellers
Before the main event, a soulful set was delivered by Canadian singer-songwriter Jonathan Roy. Known for his raspy vocals and powerful voice, Roy set the tone with an emotional performance that contrasted beautifully with the headliner’s dreamier aesthetic. Roy’s raw delivery and honest lyrics quickly won over the crowd and his interactions with the fans earned enthusiastic applause, setting the stage perfectly for Histujibungaku’s immersive soundscape to come.
From the moment vocalist and guitarist Moeka Shiotsuka stepped on stage, the atmosphere shifted. With her delicate yet piercing vocals, she led the trio through a carefully curated set that showcased the band’s wide range of eclectic rock — from shimmering dream textures to driving, post-rock intensity. The band opened with a wash of reverb and rhythm that immediately captivated the crowd, pulling them into Hitsujibungaku’s immersive sonic world.
The night’s set featured fan favorites and deep cuts alike, including tracks from their latest album 12 hugs (like butterflies), which has earned international acclaim for its introspective lyrics and lush arrangements. Songs like “Burning” translated beautifully live, with the band’s tight harmonies and emotional delivery shining through every note.
Bassist Yurika and drummer Hiroa Fukuda provided the heartbeat of the performance, balancing technical precision with an emotional undercurrent that brought a sense of urgency and weight to the show. The trio’s chemistry on stage was unmistakable, adding dimension to every song.
Though much of the crowd didn’t speak Japanese fluently, it didn’t matter—Hitsujibungaku’s music transcended language. There was a shared understanding in the room, with fans swaying back and forth, completely enveloped in the sound. Between songs, Moeka thanked the audience in both English and Japanese, her humble and heartfelt gratitude met with warm cheers.
Visually, the show leaned into minimal, moody lighting that added to the dreamy atmosphere. Blues, purples, and soft whites pulsed gently with the music, casting the band in a glow that matched their introspective sound.
By the time the final notes rang out, the audience was left in quiet awe before erupting into applause, many calling out for an encore, which was granted in the form of “Mayoiga” and “Inori”. Hitsujibungaku’s first performance in San Diego was certainly a treat, and fans will be desperately waiting for their return to America’s Finest City.
