In Flames In Vancouver was a night consisting of relentless metal mayhem. For over 30 years, the group have been crushing live shows, and if more proof was needed, look no further than their performance at the Commodore Ballroom. The Swedish Death Metal artists took the scene to its branches with melo-death grooves and prog metal. If there’s one thing In Flames has proven, it’s that they’ve aged with grace which has allowed such a cohesive sound through the years. Kicking things off was Boston based metalcore collective Unearth.
Unearth
Unearth opened the show with a fury that was clearly aimed to appease fans of In Flames earlier work. It was everything you could ask for in early 2000’s metal with all the breakdowns and duelling guitar pageantry you can handle. As Unearth said themselves on stage, they are huge InFlames fans. It was humbling and inspiring to hear the sounds of Gothenburg’s metal scene be interpreted through the bodies of another. Unearth does justice to the legacy of Swedish death metal.
Witness Another Bullet Ride
In Flames In Vancouver made quick work of any doubters who thought they’d forgotten their roots. Opening the gates were 3 of their biggest songs from the 00’s, “Cloud Connected,” “The Quiet Place,” and “Take This Life”. Vocalist Anders Fridén hit his clean vocals as well as the albums and with the harshness, it was evident he’d become more guttural and ballsy with age. Dual-guitars of Björn Gelotte and Chris Broderick were harmonious, and inversive. The counterparts, a crunching and deep live tone that left nothing to be desired. Liam Wilson and Tanner Wayne held down their grooves with clarity and ease, something expected considering their previous venture. The band played an eclectic setlist spanning 11 albums and every flew harmoniously in sync. Despite fans old enough to complain about bad backs and aching knees thinking the band changed, In Flames In Vancouver setlist proved that everything they’ve done is undeniably them, and In Flames We Trust.
On behalf of Hidden Beats, I’d like to thank In Flames and their team for allowing me to witness the chaos that was their “North American Tour”. If you’d like to catch the group on a future date or find out more about the group, visit here: https://www.inflames.com/
