We Are Story Tellers
Singers Jeremy Zucker and Chelsea Cutler share a music project made up of three albums under the name Brent. For the release of Brent iii, the final record of the trilogy, the singer-songwriter friends embarked on a North American tour; Brent Forever: The Tour.
Looking at the stage at NYC’s Town Hall felt like being transported to a homey living room with the fireplace going. As opposed to bright flashy lights or a screen with stimulating visuals, the Brent Tour stage seemed reminiscent of a documentary the two had put out on youtube about the making of their first album. In the video Jeremy explains that Brent i had been born after the duo spent a week in a cabin in Lakeville, Connecticut with the intention of writing as much music as they could and releasing the product, regardless of the outcome. The stage seemed to mimic the energy of that cabin with a leather couch, furry stools, warm toned lamps everywhere, a wooden piano, coffee table, and Persian rugs. Jeremy and Chelsea were supported on stage by 4 violinists, a drummer, a couple guitarists, a pianist, and their own selection of instruments. The live coalescence of the musicians added as much depth and warmth to the performance as the furniture and decor did.
I enjoyed the conversations Jeremy and Chelsea had with the crowd, but also the chit chat they’d have with each other between songs. Following Chelsea’s performance of the song “Sometimes” before Jeremy took to the microphone to sing “Toothbrush Song”, Jeremy laughed and said “Chelsea plays a song about sometimes wanting to die and then I have to play a song about a toothbrush. We didn’t think this through”. Jeremy also stopped at one point to tell Chelsea “someone just brought me tea and I’m wondering if that’s a subtle way of telling me I don’t sound good.” To which Chelsea replied “No, I got tea too. I think it was just an act of kindness… You know the best thing about this tea? It was delivered at the perfect drinking temperature.” These short moments of banter made the audience feel like we were in the writing room with them, just schmoozing and talking about nothing.
There were so many moments where the support the two artists show for one another really shined. The Brent albums include duets as well as songs sung by Chelsea and Jeremy individually. During songs where one person was doing all the singing, the other would find a comfortable spot on stage and listen just like the rest of us in the crowd. During one of Chelsea’s songs, Jeremy was laying on the couch with his phone flashlight up swaying to and fro, beaming with pride at his friend doing her thing.
Brent Forever: The Tour was a warm, wholesome night filled with beautiful music and talented musicians. I have been a fan of these albums for years and it was a pleasure to experience them live in such a uniquely presented performance.
