We Are Story Tellers
Jpegmafia in Vancouver was nothing short of a night of pure madness, easily one of the most unforgettable concert experiences i’ve ever witnessed. The show was a celebration of his latest album “I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU”. Rapper/Singer with a genre-defying sound Jpegmafia also known as “Peggy,” brought his Lay My Life Down Tour to a sold out Vogue Theatre.
Knowing the show was expected to be extremely busy, I made sure to arrive 45 minutes before the scheduled start time. Even though having attended numerous shows at Vogue Theatre before, admittedly I wasn’t fully prepared for what I encountered. To my surprise, the pre-show turnout was nothing short of extraordinary; the line stretched for blocks, to a level I’d never seen at the venue. The scene was electric, air buzzing with infectious excitement even before the show began. The streets of Vancouver were alive with enthusiastic chants of “Peggy,” were a testament to the passion surrounding the event. Fans were reciting lyrics from Jpegmafia and Danny Brown’s collaborative project “Scaring The Hoes,” which added to the collective energy fueling the atmosphere. Just as I thought the energy couldn’t get any higher, the night was ignited by “Hyperpop” artist Jane Remover.
Starting off with a bang, Jane Remover’s eccentric performance immediately captured the audience’s attention and was met with a palpable surge of energy from the packed venue. Admittedly, this was my first encounter with Jane Remover’s music and she struck me with a powerful impression. Her set was a captivating blend of auto-tuned vocal effects, something she joked about early in the set, combined with outstanding live guitar and drum work. The synergy between Jane Remover and co. created a soundscape that resonated deeply with fans in the audience. Jane’s performance included a dynamic showcase of eclectic tracks such as “Census Designated,” “Fling,” “Idling Somewhere,” and “Like a Kiss.” The climax of the set was a track perfectly encapsulating the essence of the performance and giving life to an already electrified audience; “Dream Sequence.” As excitement reached its peak and the stage impeccably prepared, the audience remained blissfully unaware that they were on the verge of an impending whirlwind of chaos.
As the night reached its zenith, the energy soared to its highest point as the audience was brimming with anticipation. As the house music faded and hearts raced, the lights abruptly cut out, plunging the venue into darkness. The crowd erupted into thunderous roars for “Peggy” as a shadowy figure emerged on stage. Despite remaining unseen and silent, the figure exuded a commanding presence. Standing motionless with an almost ominous air, the figure finally spoke, “My name is Jpegmafia,” igniting a frenzy in the crowd. The intensity peaked as the performance launched in “Jesus Forgive Me, I Am A Thot,” sending the audience into a spiral of madness.
What proceeded was one of the most extreme concert experiences I’ve ever had; it’s hard to find words to capture the sheer energy in the room during Jpegmafia’s performance. The crowd, mostly young adults, was electrified, with constant jumping, dancing, crowd surfing, and a mosh pit that dominated much of the floor area. However, the extreme heat in the venue led to frequent fainting, creating a distressing atmosphere at times. I have to commend the venue’s security for their outstanding work in maintaining order and ensuring the safety of those who succumbed to heat and dehydration.
While the crowd’s enthusiasm was undeniably a major highlight, it was Jpegmafia’s commanding presence that dominated the night. There wasn’t a moment to breathe as Jpegmafia delivered a relentless 24-track setlist, showcasing his illustrious career with an array of hits. New tracks like “SIN MIEDO,” “Exmilitary,” and “Don’t Rely on Other Men,” alongside crowd favourites such as “Steppa Pig,” “Garbage Pale Kids,” and the standout “Lean Beef Patty,” invigorated the audience. A particularly memorable moment came when Jpegmafia performed an auto-tuned rendition of Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe,” sending the crowd into a fit of laughter while singing along. Throughout the show, Jpegmafia’s powerful presence was unmistakable, as he energetically covered every inch of the stage, sprinting up and down his podium, and engaged dynamically with the spirited audience.
Every moment of Jpegmafia’s performance was an unfiltered delight, leaving me and many fans grinning ear to ear. The show was a unique experience that transcended my expectations of a rap concert. As Jpegmafia wrapped up his final track, “It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot,” the atmosphere was filled with both awe and melancholy. Fans were in disbelief over the unforgettable night, their visible emotions revealed that they might not soon encounter a performance as exhilarating as this one. On behalf of myself and the sold-out crowd of Vancouver, thank you, Peggy, for sharing your extraordinary talent with us. We eagerly look forward to the next opportunity to experience your incredible performance again.
