We Are Story Tellers
Montreal’s metal scene was alive and thriving as Make Them Suffer brought their electrifying energy to a sold-out crowd. With a lineup featuring AVIVAIVA, Windwaker, and Like Moths to Flames, the night was an unforgettable showcase of metalcore, deathcore, and everything in between.
The evening kicked off with AVIVAIVA, a four-piece band that, aside from one member, performed masked—adding an air of mystery to their classic metal/deathcore sound. The absence of a bassist was barely noticeable as both guitarists exuded relentless energy, fueling an already eager crowd. Crowd surfers wasted no time in making an appearance, setting the stage for an adrenaline-fueled night. The band’s blend of clean vocals and guttural screams created the perfect balance, ensuring that fans were fully engaged from the start.
Next up was Windwaker, hailing from Melbourne, Australia. They kicked off their set with a clip from Creed, immediately catching the audience’s attention. Their rapcore elements, combined with an electronic edge, brought a unique twist to the evening’s lineup. The vocalist’s rapid delivery gave off a rapping vibe at times, while later songs incorporated a poppier vocal style. The band’s ability to keep the energy high proved that their genre-blending approach was a hit with the crowd.
Straight out of Columbus, Ohio, Like Moths to Flames delivered a high-octane performance. Their deathcore sound, led by a vocalist with a range straight out of a horror movie (in the best way possible), had the audience in the palm of their hands. With instructions to jump on command, the crowd followed suit, creating a sea of movement. It had been eight years since the band’s last visit to Montreal, and they made sure to leave a lasting impression, embracing the chaos with non-stop moshing, crowd surfing, and circle pits. The vocalist, openly admitting to smoking eight joints before hitting the stage, still delivered an impeccable performance, including a standout rendition of “I Solemnly Swear.”
Finally, the night culminated with Make Them Suffer from Perth, Australia. The five-piece metalcore powerhouse commanded the stage with one of the most dynamic sets of the year. A rare but welcome sight in the genre, their lineup includes a female member, bringing a fresh and distinctive element to their sound. Their transitions between clean vocals and screams were flawless, sending shivers down the spines of those in attendance.
The band’s production was a spectacle in itself. Unlike the darker, more atmospheric lighting of the previous acts, Make Them Suffer’s visuals perfectly complemented their sound. The bassist and drummer performed atop risers, adding to the band’s commanding presence. They took a moment to acknowledge their new self-titled album and reflected on their return to Montreal, noting that it hadn’t been long since their last show at Beanfield.
With an hour-long set that left the crowd both exhausted and exhilarated, Make Them Suffer delivered one of the most memorable performances of 2025. For fans of heavy music, this was a night to remember—a testament to the power and passion of the metalcore community.
