We Are Story Tellers
MisterWives in NYC performed a spooky concert on Halloween night at Brooklyn Paramount.
The night started with the first opening band Moody Joody. The group took to the stage wearing matching chrome halloween costumes, the two lead singers in sparkly silver alien outfits and their male counterparts wearing astronaut jumpsuits. Moody Joody played upbeat alternative tracks and the audience seemed to be having fun dancing to their songs. The band told the crowd that this is the second tour they’ve been a part of, but that this specific show had to have been their favorite because of how funny it is to look out at an entire audience in silly costumes. They said they’ll never perform without capes again, they were having so much fun. For the last song, two people from their team jumped on stage, one in an inflatable alien costume and the other in an astronaut helmet. The band hung out by their merch table after their set and I had a quick chat with one of the members who confirmed what I had been thinking, that it was in fact incredibly hot performing in a tin foil space suit!
The second opener of the night was a band called Joan who had a more mellow, indie-synth vibe. The drummer and guitarist of the group were in striped prisoner uniforms while the lead singer was dressed as a sheriff. Although there wasn’t a ton of interesting movement on stage, a lot of head bobbing and leg shaking along to the beat, they did do something quite unique. A few times during different songs, the drummer and guitarist switched spots and picked up playing each other’s instruments. I’ve never seen this done before and I could hear the audience all saying “oh they’re switching, that’s so fun”. It created a lot of interest and I though it was a great move. The music was good and the crowd was engaged.
This show felt like a massive Halloween themed dance party. The stage was decked out in cobwebs, gravestones, caution tape, ghosts and lanterns. There was a screen in the back of the stage displaying interesting and spooky visuals. The audience was packed with people in their best Halloween costumes, everything from a couple dressed as two green crocs, to a blood soaked “Carrie”. The October 31st show was promoted as being a “One Nightmare Only” concert. The music started and the band entered the stage in phenomenal costumes all referencing the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas. Lead singer Mandy Lee rocked a “Sally” costume with a matching makeup look, drummer Etienne Bowler had his brain peeking out of his skull to emulate “Dr. Finkelstein”, bassist William Hehir wore a full body “Oogie Boogie” suit which he promptly took the head covering off of because he, you know, needed to be able to see, guitarist Marc Campbell was dressed as “Jack Skellington” with some killer face paint, and keyboardist and saxophonist Mike Murphy was the “Mayor of Halloweentown”, laughably tall hat and all.
The costumes and stage dressings definitely kicked off the night with a strong start, but the band’s performance sealed the deal. The venue erupted with energy and the audience sang so loudly as the group started their performance. Mandy Lee and the rest of the band had great chemistry and top notch stage presence. There was a ton of movement on stage and each performer seemed pumped to be there. Marc Campbell had a saxophone solo during one of the songs and watching him in his enormous “Mayor” hat and face painted smile was so entertaining. I was not super knowledgeable about MisterWives or their music before this show but I was immediately hooked and was taking notes of which songs were my favorites. Overall the production and performance quality was a 10/10 for me. After the show I got into my car and listened to half the setlist again. MisterWives “One Nightmare Only” was a unique concert experience and I’d love to see them live again (maybe next time in normal clothing). MisterWives in NYC was a great night!
