We Are Story Tellers

Monday Night Raw in Montreal

Monday April 15th, 2024, was an incredible day in the eyes of a Montreal WWE fan. Monday Night Raw was about to take way in the home of the “Montreal Screwball”, Centre Bell in downtown Montreal, Quebec. The stadium filled up as the excitement built, the event brought in a whopping 15,000 people. From the outside people were yelling chants of WWE Hall of Famer Ric flairs infamous “WOO,” along with Main Event Jey Uso’s signature “YEET.” It was also an incredibly special night as Montreal is the hometown of the new Intercontinental Champion Sami Zayn. Sami ended GUNTHERS historic 666-day reign just two weeks earlier in Philadelphia at WrestleMania 40 (the highest grossing WrestleMania of all time).

WWE Main Event

To start out the night, WWE did a two-match taping of its mid-card fighters’ programs “Main Event” and WWE “Speed” which featured exciting matches with Natalya Vs. Xia Li and Otis Vs. Ludvig Kaiser, and JD Mcdonagh vs, Ricochet.   During Main events first match it was Natalya vs Xia Li (unknowly at the time this would be her last televised match). Both superstars showed tremendous efforts throughout the match, but in the end, Natalya was able to use the sharper shooter submission on Xia and win the match via submission. Next was a match between two questionable wrestlers in the eyes of the WWE universe Ludvig Kaiser of Imperium and Otis of The Alpha Academy. Otis was the favorite to win from the start as Ludvig was giving energy of bragging and unfairness from the beginning. Otis featured his famous “The Worm” move and wiggled across stage like legend Scotty 2 Hotty, but unfortunately could not come out with the win against his German powerhouse opponent.

WWE Speed

On next was JD Mcdonagh of the judgement day vs. The highflyer Ricochet. This match was part of the tournament to crown the new WWE Speed champion. Ricochet didn’t stop flying throughout the entire match, jumping out through the ropes and even featured the famous shooting star press move. The one-on-one action had the WWE Universe on the edge of their seats, and the crowd favorite Ricochet was victorious in the end, advancing in the WWE Speed tournament.

Monday Night Raw

As Monday Night Raw officially came to a start live all over the world, the Womens World Champions music blaredthroughout the arena as Rhea Ripley came to the ring in a sling, looking less than enthusiastic. WWE Raw general manager Adam Pearse joined her in the ring. As she took a microphone and announced that because of the unprovoked attack on her the previous week on Raw she is being forced to relinquish the championship because of a shoulder injury that is going to take her out for at least a few months. As she puts the title down, she reminds that whoever wins the title after her, that when she is back in good health that she “is coming back for blood”. Liv Morgans music starts to play throughout the arena and out she came surrounded by WWE official security taunting Rhea to come and get her, continuously laughing as if she was an evil genius for what she had done. Rhea tried to attack but was stopped by WWE officials

FIGHT NIGHT with the return of Sheamus vs. Ivar

As the program went to commercial break, the audience waited for the first match of the night. Sheamus’ old music started to play on the speakers and the crowd went insane, with his return being anticipated for months. He was welcomed back with open arms by Montreal and the entire WWE Universe watching at home.

His opponent, no other than The Viking Raders Ivar. A large man to say the least, displayed incredible off the ropes moves throughout the match, Sheamus took the momentum and delivered his Brogue Kick to take the win and bring FIGHT NIGHT back to the Monday night program.

Triple H shows off new World Tag Team Championships with The Mix & R-Truth

My personal favorite part of the night, I finally got to witness the presence of WWE Hall of Famer Paul “Triple H” Levesque as he entered the ring with a surprise under a silk blanket. The WWE CCO called for The Miz and R-Truth, the new Raw Tag Team Champions, to join him in the ring. After talking about the most successful WrestleMania ever (WW40) two weeks previous and reminding the crowd of the “new era” of the WWE he uncovered two beautiful new Tag Team Championship belts, which will replace the current Raw ones and reintroduce The World Tag Team Championships. R-truth still has the idea that Triple H is Tommaso Ciampa of DIY, instead of Triple H from DX.

DIY vs. The New Day vs. The Creed brothers

Next was an explosive, high flying 3-way tag team match to be the number one contender for the World Tag Team championships. DIY, New Day, and The Creed Brothers took to the ring and delivered an energetic close match, with DIY coming out successful to face Awesome Truth on Raw the following week. New Day and The Creed Brothers still gave a fantastic effort to earn a chance at the titles. My second time seeing Kofi Kingston in action live and his age has never affected the way he performs. Just as high flying and hilarious as he’s ever been.

Candace Lerae & Indie Hartwell vs. Maxxine Duper & Ivy Nile

The women’s division came into action with Candace Lerae and Indie Hartwell vs. Maxxine Dupri and Ivy Nile. Indie Hartwell has been questioning Candace Lerae’s choice for the last little while, so the match had some tension right from the beginning. Maxxine being trained by The Alpha Academy has started to branch out on her own, showing her earned skills including her exclusive cross body well holding up a “peace” sign.
After a short match, Indie Hartwell distracted the referee by trying to join the match well not being tagged in which made him miss the tag between Maxxine and Ivy, which caused the referee to be distracted keeping Ivy out and gave Maxxine a close line and pulling Candace over her for the 1, 2, 3. Indie and Candace seem to finally be on the same page, fighting dirty to win.

"Dirty" Dominic Mysterio vs. Andrade

The next match between Rey Mysterio’s son “Dirty” Dominic Mysterio vs. Andrade, for a revenge fight for Andrade teaming with Rey instead of Dom at WrestleMania. The match started with a cheap chop to Andrade’s chest. The former NXT Champion showed his extreme strength and power throughout the match, including respect for late former WWE Champion Eddie Guerrero. Andrade came out successful in the match but right after JD Mcdonagh and Dom continue to attack Andrade until Ricochet runs from behind the Raw screens and scares the two Judgement Day member away.

Chelsea green & Piper Niven vs. Katana Chance & Kayden Carter

The Canadian Chelsea Green and Piper Niven became tag team champions when Sonya Deville obtained an ACL injury, in which was going to make them forfeit the Women’s Tag Team Titles, until Piper chimed in and made herself Chelsea Green’s tag team partner. They continued as Champions until finally losing them, but remained a tag team faction and became quite well adjusted to each other. They faced off against Katana Chance and Kayden Carter for a short match, in which Piper delivered a huge cross body and came out with the win, with Chelsea happily celebrating with her in the ring.

WWE Champion Cody Rhodes thanks his friends for the help at WrestleMania 40

Finally, the superstar everybody wanted to see after his massive match at WrestleMania, Cody Rhodes, the man who finally finished his story. Cody came to the ring causing a huge pop throughout Centre Bell, thanking everyone who helped him come out successfully at the greatest WrestleMania of all time. Jey Uso then joined him in the ring before his match against Finn Balor, to show his friend one more time, the appreciation he has for him. As he left the ring to give it to Jey for his match he said “Jey, until we …… “YEET” again…).

Jey Uso vs. Finn Balor

Finn Balor of Judgement Day took on Jey Uso in a singles match as the last match before the highly anticipated main event. As Jey Uso is the number one contender for the World Heavy Weight Championship against Judgement Days leader Damien Priest. Finn took the match by storm with his ruthless aggression, hard chops, and lots of reversals, but in the end, Jey came out successful and beat the former WWE superstar with a spear and then an Uso splash onto Balor. After the match finished, the World Heavy Weight Champion came out to show his belt to Jey and remind him why he’s champion. At this point the Judgement Day came out from behind and attacked Jey Uso, but he quickly overcame then and exited the ring through the crowd and through the concessions, walking right into the public, shaking hands and yeeting to the WWE fans he passed by. He came to the outside of the arena where he met his longtime friend and Montreal native Sami Zayn. Sami then says he is entering the building the same way he did at his first show ever, through the front door.

Montreal's own SAMI ZAYN vs. Chad Gable

Sami came out through the crowd for his entrance, with the entire crowd singing his song and celebrating the homecoming of the new Intercontinental Champion. Running around the crowd, he must have felt like he was on top of the world, as he ran around twice. The energy in the building was so incredible that you felt it through your entire body, I’ve never felt an exciting energy like I did in that moment. After the excitement died down The Alpha Academy’s Chad Gable came out from the back and entered the ring for the main event with Sami Zayn in his first title defense. Sami had his family and friends front row and center for the fight, and he did not disappoint them. It was a long and grueling fight, with both superstars showing immense athleticism and strength. Chad Gable gave numerous ankle locks to try and make Sami submit. At one point Sami tried to give Gable a sharpshooter to pay tribute to the legendary “Montreal Screw job” but was unsuccessful with his injured ankle from earlier on in the match. Sami Zayn ended up being the victor, and just as he was going to celebrate with his wife, Chad let his anger get the best of him and started a brutal attack on Zayn with Supplex’s and hits to the corner of the ring.

This night was a true dream come true for me, as I’ve been a WWE fan on and off for 20 years, but to have such a big homecoming for an incredible superstar made it so much more special.
