We Are Story Tellers
Myles Smith makes a splash in NYC with a great show despite a unexpected indoor flood.
Tors is a three member indie-folk band hailing from the UK. The group is composed of brothers Matt and Theo Weedon, and Jack Bowden. The trio opened the show with a beautiful three-piece harmony introduction before heading into their song “Happy Enough”. Shortly after introducing themselves and starting their second song, every light in the venue turned on and all of the sound equipment on stage stopped working. The band was just as surprised as the audience was by the sudden halt in the performance, and no one was quite sure what was going on for a few moments. There seemed to be no purposeful reason for the interruption so the band decided to improvise and began playing an acoustic version of their song. They had the front section of the crowd singing along and engaging more than ever since the venue was suddenly filled with light and the performers and crowd now had a clear view of one another. The attempt at an acoustic set was fun and exciting, but unfortunately short lived as the majority of the crowd was too focused on the interruption.
It turns out, a pipe had frozen from the New York City winter weather and had burst, leading to a gush of water that was spraying out of the ceiling in the venue hallway which was visible from the main room where the concert was taking place. Tors left the stage while venue staff figured out the best course of action. The show was stopped for around 25 minutes while the situation was handled, until eventually an announcement was made that the show would be continuing and the night would progress as planned. Tors re-entered the stage and, although their time was cut short and they had to perform an abbreviated version or their planned setlist, they picked up and went right back into their beautiful vocals and the crowd loved them.
After an eventful start to the night, Myles Smith finally took to the stage to kick off the sold out first stop of his “We Were Never Strangers” tour. Myles started his set with his introspective yet positive and upbeat track “Wait For You” and it was immediately clear that this would be an energy-filled performance. The show was full of folk songs that had a warm, evocative feel as well as a great build up towards the catchy hooks in each number.
Myles stopped to speak with his fans and mentioned that his brother was in the audience that night. He spoke about their experience growing up with a single mom and led into an unreleased acoustic song about how his experience with his father leaving after his parents’ divorce shaped his perception of love and relationships. The song included lyrics like “My first heartbreak looks a little bit like me” and “One day when I’m a father, just know I’ll never leave”.
Myles took time to acknowledge that just two years ago he was sitting in an orchestra wondering how he was going to “make this music thing work”, and two years later he’s gone from playing tiny venues to this sold out show in New York City. He expressed his gratitude to everyone in the crowd for getting him to this point in his career. Myles continued to bounce around on stage and exude energy during his performance. He was very interactive with each member of his band, stopping on different sides of the stage to give attention to each musician supporting him. Later in his set Myles took the time to thank the band members, who he called some of his best friends in the world. We had Joey Devine on guitar, Elliot Herrington on keys, and Daniel Said playing drums.
Myles brought his last song “Little By Little” to a close by encouraging the audience to sing along to the final lines together in an acapella style chorus. Myles seemed so grateful and proud as he left the stage. Fans immediately began chanting “Stargazing” as they had yet to hear his hit track be performed. After a few moments, the artist reappeared on stage to play three final songs concluding with the ‘Billboard Hot 100’ track “Stargazing”.
Prior to this show, I had known two Myles Smith songs from hearing them on the radio. After attending this concert, I am pleased to know that the rest of his discography is of a similar caliber and I sincerely enjoyed all of the music he shared throughout the night.
