Ottawa Bluesfest 2026 Day 1

ttawa Bluesfest 2026 Day 1 Kicks Off Another Unforgettable Summer at LeBreton Flats

Ottawa Bluesfest 2026 Day 1 officially kicked off another summer of live music at LeBreton Flats, and despite grey skies and steady rain early in the day, the excitement around the grounds never faded. After waiting an entire year for the festival to return, it felt great to be back watching fans flood through the gates as another memorable edition began.

With a lineup that featured everything from country and blues to hip hop, folk and psychedelic rock, Day 1 offered something for every kind of music fan. Artists including Digable Planets, Jessie Murph and Cody Johnson helped set the tone for what promises to be another incredible week of music in Ottawa.

Justin Fancy Gets the Tent Stage Moving

Justin Fancy had the honour of opening the LeBreton Stage inside the tent, and even with the rain falling outside, he wasted no time getting the early arrivals into the festival spirit. Although I was new to his music, he immediately impressed with powerful vocals and a confident stage presence that encouraged more people to gather under the cover of the tent.

Between songs, Justin took time to chat with the audience, making the performance feel welcoming and personal. As the crowd steadily grew throughout his set, he made sure the opening hours of the festival started on the right note before everyone began exploring the grounds.

Jade Hilton Brightens the Main Stage

Opening the Main Stage, Jade Hilton proved that gloomy weather could not dampen the mood. Dressed in a playful pink babydoll dress, the Canadian singer songwriter immediately captured attention with her bright personality and infectious smile.

Blending country and pop influences, she delivered an upbeat and feel good performance that felt effortless from start to finish. Her confidence and youthful energy made for a perfect introduction to the Main Stage and helped establish an optimistic tone for the rest of the festival.

Jermaine Holmes Sets the Mood on the Hard Rock Stage

Jermaine Holmes officially opened the newly renamed Hard Rock Stage following the announcement of the partnership with Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. As a Grammy Award winning vocalist, he was tasked with setting the atmosphere for the day, and he did exactly that.

His smooth voice and effortless delivery drew the audience closer as his soulful performance unfolded. Every note seemed to come naturally, creating an inviting atmosphere while giving fans an early reminder of just how much talent was packed into this year’s lineup.

Satellite Birdhouse Brings Joy to the Theatre

Next stop was the Barney Danson Theatre where Satellite Birdhouse opened the indoor programming with a performance that immediately drew people inside. Their multi piece lineup created a rich sound that quickly hooked everyone settling into the intimate venue.

Fronted by Stacey DuBois, whose infectious smile matched the band’s joyful energy, the performance felt genuinely fun from beginning to end. Alongside Troy’s effortless guitar playing, the group looked completely at home on stage, making for a fantastic opening set inside the theatre.

Lloyd Spiegel Trio Delivers a Blues Masterclass

Over on the LeBreton Stage, Australia’s Lloyd Spiegel Trio showcased exactly why Spiegel is considered one of today’s finest contemporary blues musicians. His intricate guitar playing balanced technical brilliance with soulful emotion, making every solo feel purposeful and engaging.

While the trio worked beautifully together, trombonist Lisa Baird consistently stood out throughout the performance. Her warmth, personality and dazzling musical flourishes elevated an already outstanding set into one of the afternoon’s strongest musical showcases.

Jessie Murph Captivates the Main Stage

Jessie Murph completely mesmerized the audience from the moment she stepped onto the RBC Stage. Wearing a flowing white dress and white heels, the Alabama singer songwriter floated gracefully across the stage alongside her band, creating an elegant visual that perfectly matched her performance.

Her emotionally charged vocals contrasted beautifully with her soft stage presence, making every moment feel both vulnerable and powerful. Throughout the set she smiled, waved to the audience and looked genuinely happy to be performing, making Ottawa Bluesfest 2026 Day 1 even more memorable.

Digable Planets Bring Timeless Grooves

One of the day’s most anticipated performances arrived when Digable Planets took over the Hard Rock Stage. This was my first time seeing the legendary group live, and I was curious to see how the crowd would respond as the rain slowly eased and more people continued filling the grounds.

The band built the atmosphere with incredible grooves before Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler, Craig “Doodlebug” Irving and Mary Ann “Ladybug Mecca” Vieira each made their entrance. Their blend of classic funky hip hop rhythms and masterful lyricism reminded everyone exactly why they have remained such an important part of the genre, making the performance just as enjoyable to absorb as it was to watch.

The Longest Johns Pack the Theatre

Back inside the theatre, The Longest Johns delivered one of the biggest surprises of the day. Before their set began, fans were treated to an impromptu performance from Sean Dagher, who has been opening for the band during the tour, making the experience even more memorable.

Although I had heard of The Longest Johns before, this was my first opportunity to see them live, and I honestly do not know why I waited so long. The theatre was completely packed with standing room only, and I cannot remember seeing a lineup this long for the venue. Every song became a giant singalong, with the audience knowing every word as though they were gathered with old friends. Even people waiting outside simply enjoyed listening from the line. By the end of Day 1, this had already become one of the biggest surprises of the festival for me.

GOAT Creates a Psychedelic Celebration

LeBreton Stage transformed into something completely different when Sweden’s mysterious masked collective GOAT took over. Their unique combination of psychedelic rock, funk, world music and hypnotic rhythms created an immersive performance that immediately stood apart from everything else on the schedule.

Their colourful costumes and anonymous identities only added to the mystique as infectious grooves quickly had people dancing, clapping and cheering throughout the set. It was the kind of performance that turned curious festival goers into new fans before the final song had even finished.

DJ Champion Owns the Closing Hard Rock Slot

Closing out the Hard Rock Stage was DJ Champion, who stepped into the slot after Rev Run unfortunately had to withdraw. As an old school hip hop fan, I was personally excited for Rev Run, so it was certainly disappointing to hear about the change.

Being a last minute replacement while a major headliner performs on the Main Stage is never an easy assignment. After a few early technical hiccups, though, DJ Champion settled in, built the atmosphere and delivered a genuinely fun performance that fully made the closing slot his own.

Cody Johnson Ends the Night in Style

Closing the Main Stage, Texas country star Cody Johnson reminded everyone why he has become one of country’s biggest live performers. He commanded every inch of the stage with confidence, smooth movements and a genuine connection with the audience that never wavered throughout the night.

Between songs, Johnson spoke openly about his wife and thanked God, creating sincere moments that balanced the high energy performance. As the final notes rang out, a spectacular fireworks display illuminated the sky above LeBreton Flats, bringing an unforgettable finish to an incredible opening day.

Festival Atmosphere

Despite rainy skies welcoming everyone back to LeBreton Flats, the weather never became the story. Fans moved freely between the Main Stage, Hard Rock Stage, LeBreton Stage and Barney Danson Theatre, discovering new artists while reconnecting with familiar favourites. From intimate indoor singalongs to energetic outdoor performances, every corner of the festival offered something unique, making Day 1 feel like the perfect beginning to another incredible week of live music.

Final Thoughts

If Day 1 is any indication of what lies ahead, this year’s festival is already shaping up to be something special. Ottawa Bluesfest 2026 Day 1 successfully brought together an incredibly diverse lineup, memorable performances and the unmistakable excitement that comes from returning to LeBreton Flats for another summer. With so many unforgettable moments already in the books, there is every reason to believe the best is still to come.
