We Are Story Tellers
Montreal came alive during a sold-out night of indie music bliss as the up-and-coming New Translations set the stage for the beloved Rainbow Kitten Surprise. It was a night full of raw emotion, incredible vocals, and the kind of atmosphere that only a city like Montreal can create.
Opening the evening was New Translations, a synth-pop/alternative indie band based out of Nashville. Dressed in coordinated grey long-sleeve shirts and camo pants, the band immediately stood out visually—and their sound didn’t disappoint either.
The group’s deep-voiced lead vocalist had a commanding stage presence, dancing across the stage with infectious energy and fully engaging the crowd. They performed songs off their February 2025 album, Vacation, offering a fresh but emotionally rich sound that connected with both new listeners and longtime indie fans.
New Translations brought a modern, polished take on synth-pop, but with a rawness that made their performance feel intimate. Their set left a strong impression and made it clear they’re a band to watch in 2025.
Then came Rainbow Kitten Surprise, the North Carolina indie rock powerhouse, greeted by roaring applause and an overwhelmingly passionate crowd. Fans sang every lyric, danced without inhibition, and some were even brought to tears—overcome with the joy of seeing their favorite band live.
The band’s joy was evident throughout their performance. At one point, they paused to say how much Montreal means to them. “Every time we come here, the crowd is unbelievable,” they shared, visibly moved by the reception.
One standout moment was hearing “Cocaine Jesus”, one of my all-time favorite tracks, performed live. The way the song resonated through the crowd was powerful—a shared emotional release that captured everything special about the night.
For many, including this writer, Rainbow Kitten Surprise’s music evokes personal memories—like peaceful drives through the Rocky Mountains—making the experience all the more intimate and nostalgic.
They delivered a dynamic, emotional, and musically flawless set that proved once again why they’re one of the most beloved bands in the indie rock scene today. It was a night of connection, catharsis, and unforgettable live music.
