Retro Revival at the Bell Centre: Soft Cell & Simple Minds Light Up Montreal

Last night at the Bell Centre in Montreal, fans were transported back to the golden age of 80s music as Soft Cell and Simple Minds delivered unforgettable performances. With decades of iconic hits and timeless energy, the two legendary acts proved their music remains as powerful today as ever.

Soft Cell Sets the Tone with Synth-Pop Classics

Opening the night, UK synth-pop pioneers Soft Cell—made up of David Ball and Marc Almond—brought a tidal wave of nostalgic energy. Known for their global hit “Tainted Love,” the duo played a tight, dynamic set that reminded Montreal why they’ve stood the test of time for over 45 years.

Marc Almond was in fine form, engaging the crowd with charm and wit. At one point, he joked about how long it took them to finally perform in Canada—“It took us long enough to get here,” he quipped, met with cheers from longtime fans. The audience, many pressed up against the barricade, hung on every word and sang along throughout the set.

When “Tainted Love” finally arrived later in the set, it triggered one of the loudest singalongs of the night. The synths pulsed, Almond’s vocals soared, and the Bell Centre erupted into a sea of flashing lights and waving arms.

Simple Minds Captivate with Emotion and Power

Headliners Simple Minds, the legendary Scottish rock band formed in 1977, followed with a powerful, emotionally rich performance. Frontman Jim Kerr declared, “We’re giving 100% tonight—because Montreal has always been incredible to us.” And they delivered.

Kerr’s haunting vocals, dramatic delivery, and heartfelt passion filled the arena. At times singing from his knees, he led the band through a career-spanning setlist that included “Alive and Kicking,” “Waterfront,” and the iconic “Don’t You (Forget About Me)”, forever linked with The Breakfast Club. The crowd sang every word, their voices echoing off the walls of the Bell Centre.

A Night to Remember

This Simple Minds and Soft Cell concert in Montreal was far more than a nostalgia trip—it was a celebration of musical endurance, passion, and connection. For fans old and new, it was a night of timeless songs and unforgettable performances that lit up the Bell Centre with retro magic and lasting emotion.
