We Are Story Tellers

Soul Asylum in Montreal

Saturday night in Montreal featured American rock band Soul Asylum as they brought their Slowly But Shirley tour to the iconic Beanfield Theatre. Alongside them were local Montrealer punk rockers Blurry Eyes who joined the seasoned rockers for two dates, as they tagged along for the Ottawa show as well.

Blurry Eyes

I didn’t know what to expect when walking into Blurry Eyes, but they quickly became one of my favourite Montreal bands. Their music gave vibes of the earlier 2000s era of pop punk, just all around feel good music. Songs were all written in English, but they spoke to the audience in Quebecois, showing the love and passion they have for their city and province. Before they even strummed a note, you could year yells from the audience of “We came for Blurry Eyes”. All around impressed by these guys and excited to catch them at their next local gig.

Soul Asylum

Being one of the younger guys in the room, I only really knew Soul Asylums mega hit “Runaway Train”, but man these guys still have all the energy they did in the 90’s. As they went on stage the theme song for the hit TV series “The Love Boat” played throughout the theatre. Guitarist Ryan Smith was decked out in Vans and a black and white striped shirt jumping about the stage along with Bassist Jeremy Tappero hyping the crowd with his smooth bass notes.

The legendary Dave Pirner showed the power of his vocals with a number of great tunes throughout the night, as well a two song encore, which got the crowd screaming.

This was a show that I didn’t know what to expect from, but man these guys turned everything around and really showed me some classic 90s rock and roll. If you can catch this tour, you should because you won’t regret a night of chill vibes and good company.
