We Are Story Tellers
Soulja Boy’s NYC stop on his SODMG tour was the throwback I didn’t know I needed. The show was MC’ed by Dj Lil Mark who remained on stage for the entire length of the concert. He introduced several openers who each performed just a few songs for the crowd. Although the opening acts seemed to be lesser known artists and only had short windows to perform, the crowd hyped up each one and brought the energy during every song. Dj Lil Mark warmed up the crowd with some songs between sets. He started with rap music which of course fit the genre of the night, but he slowly switched over to nostalgic hits like Party in the USA by Miley Cyrus, Baby by Justin Bieber, and We Are Young by Fun which the crowd belted every word (I may or may not have been the loudest).
After successfully pumping up the energy levels in the room, Dj Lil Mark introduced Soulja Boy to the stage. Soulja came running out while singing the intro of the first song on the setlist and joining him, came a posse of about twenty or so people. The group were not a part of any band or production crew, they were merely standing around on stage while Soulja performed. This was definitely a first for me as I’ve never seen an artist perform with an entourage accompanying them at all, let alone for the full length of the set. It threw me off at first because there were 20-25 extra bodies on stage, some cheering and dancing, some just recording videos on their phone. I quickly accepted the fact that they weren’t going anywhere and moved my focus back to the performance.
The crowd loved every moment and were singing along to songs new and old. I was actually pleasantly surprised by how many songs I knew. I found myself singing along several times and thinking “wait, THIS is a Soulja Boy song??” Hits like “Kiss Me Thru The Phone”, “Crank That (Soulja Boy)”, “Turn My Swag On”, “Pretty Boy Swag”, “Rick and Morty” are such standout tunes from when I was growing up.
I did notice that the artist was often pointing the microphone at the crowd and letting them sing along while the backing track played. He would sing into the mic every so often but it seemed like the DJ was doing most of the heavy lifting in terms of actual music. The crowd didn’t seem to be disappointed by this and were just happy to be seeing Soulja Boy live. The entire set only lasted 45 minutes which is quite short but it was certainly a lively 45 minutes.
