We Are Story Tellers

Spotlight: AHI – A Soulful Journey Through Music and Storytelling

Spotlight: AHI – a singer-songwriter whose music is as soulful as it is inspiring. With his raw vocals and deeply personal storytelling, AHI has carved out a unique space in the music world. In this interview, we dive into his journey so far, from early influences to life on the road and the stories behind his most powerful songs. Whether you’ve followed AHI from the start or are just discovering his music, this conversation offers an intimate look at the man behind the music.

Do you remember the first album or song you heard that made you go “I want to do that!”?

Growing up, I was surrounded by music, but it wasn’t until my 20s that I picked up a guitar and began creating music myself. As a kid, I was a horrible singer, but I’d always loved writing and storytelling. It was somewhat natural for me to find music as a new way to express the emotions and stories that I couldn’t easily put into words otherwise. There wasn’t ever a song that made me want to create music, music was just the vehicle for me to share what I feel is my purpose

Who are some of the more out-of-the-box influences that have helped shape your sound?

My sound intertwines folk roots with threads of my Caribbean heritage and echoes of the global influences that shaped me. For me, as the child of Caribbean parents, I can’t help but believe that Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song” is one of the greatest folk songs ever written. Additionally, my travels across various parts of the globe have exposed me to diverse musical traditions, all of which have seeped into my music, creating a unique fusion that I like to call “folk music the whole world can sing to.”

What is your process like when putting together music?

My songwriting process often begins with nothing more than my voice and an acoustic guitar. I focus on capturing the heart of the message first and foremost, and then building a soundscape to reflect that. Co-producing with Rahki definitely brought a fresh perspective too, blending our backgrounds and appreciation for so many different genres with my folk/roots influences was instrumental in shaping the final sound of this album.

How do you maintain authenticity in your music while exploring new sounds and themes?

Maintaining authenticity is about staying true to my roots and personal experiences while being open to new influences. By weaving in flavors, textures, and colors from my heritage and global travels, I ensure that my music evolves without departing from the core of who I am. This approach allows me to explore new sounds and themes while keeping the essence of my artistry intact.

You have some new work recently released called The Light Behind The Sun. Can you tell us the story behind this work?

The Light Behind The Sun is a deeply personal album that blends African and Caribbean diasporic influences with folk music, creating a unique sound. Produced by Rahki, known for his work with artists like Kendrick Lamar and Aloe Blacc, the album was brought to life by an entirely Black creative team—a rare and significant feat in folk music. The project celebrates resilience, hope, and the beauty of human connection, reflecting my journey and the diverse influences that have shaped me as an artist.

How do you think your music has evolved from older work until now?

Over the years, my music has evolved to incorporate a broader spectrum of sounds and influences. Starting with simple acoustic songs, I’ve embraced elements of soul, folk, and roots music, leading to a more intricate and rich musical tapestry. Stepping out of my comfort zone to collaborate with others has also introduced new layers and depth to my music.

What is the most interesting thing you've learned about yourself on your journey?

One of the most interesting revelations has been recognizing the strength and resilience within myself. My travels and experiences have taught me that even in challenging times, the kindness of strangers and the universal language of music can bridge gaps and foster deep connections.

Outside of music, what are some of the things that keep you grounded?

Family plays a crucial role in keeping me grounded. Balancing my career with personal life ensures that I stay connected to my roots and maintain perspective amidst the demands of the music industry.

What is one thing you think should be asked more in an interview that isn't asked enough?

I believe interviews should delve more into the artist’s creative process and the experiences that shape their artistry, rather than focusing solely on the end product. Understanding the journey provides deeper insight into the music itself.

What is the first song you think a new fan should listen to that gives the best introduction to who you are as an artist?

“Until You” is a track that encapsulates my sound and storytelling approach, offering new listeners a glimpse into my musical identity.

What are some of the milestones you are most proud of over the last year, and what are some of the next ones you hope to hit?

Releasing The Light Behind The Sun and collaborating with an all-Black creative team are significant milestones I’m proud of. Moving forward, I aim to take this music on the road, connecting with audiences worldwide, and continuing to evolve as an artist.

What motivates you to keep pursuing music?

The desire to connect with people and share stories that resonate on a human level motivates me. Music’s power to heal, inspire, and bring people together fuels my passion to continue creating.

Are you happy?

I definitely find joy in creating music that means something, but there’s too much going on in the world for any of us to just be happy within its current state. I think true happiness is something we’re all still striving for.
