What inspired you to pursue music?

I grew up surrounded by music, so I can’t really remember how it all started. My mom’s a singer and my dad was a professional dancer, so it all came very natural for me to move in that direction.

How do you approach songwriting? Do you have a specific process?

I get songwriting ideas in all different types of situations and places and record them as voice memos. Then I bring them to the studio and develop them from there. I write A LOT of songs, for my last album I think we had 150 that we had to narrow down to just 14. It sounds insane but that’s just how my brain works, I need to let it all out and then puzzle it all together into a concept.

How would you describe your style of music?

Pop is the foundation I guess, but I’m more inspired by the old school sound of the 60s and 70s that the typical chart pop. I love real instruments and the whole production process is very important to me.

What is your favorite song that you’ve put out and why?

Look Who’s Laughing Now is very important to me, it’s my fuck you-song to everyone who made fun of me and didn’t believe in me when I was younger. It’s my revenge song!

Do you have any pre-show rituals?

I warm up my voice, dance around with my band to get the energy up and sometimes I eat a banana just before I go on stage haha. It’s just a weird habit that got stuck.

What would you say is your favorite part of touring?

I’m very close to my band and crew, so traveling around with them and exploring new places together is so much fun. Going to bed in one town and waking up in another is a weird but great feeling.

What does a day off look like for you?

I love food, so either I’ll have some friends over and we’ll cook together, or I’ll visit a really good restaurant. I’m also very close to my family and became an uncle last year. Hanging out with my brother’s kid is a new favorite activity.

What are the biggest challenges you face as a musician in today’s era of music?

I guess it’s that artists also have to have insane social media skills to keep the hype going. Sometimes it feels you have to put more hours into that, than into the music itself and that can’t be it right?

What inspired your latest album “Pink Velvet Theatre”?

It was this imaginary room I created, inspired by old school musicals and stuff like that, which I used as a creative box during my songwriting process. Does this song fit into the Pink Velvet Theatre world? If not I saved it for later.

Now that “Pink Velvet Theatre” is out, what’s next for Benjamin Ingrosso? Are there any upcoming events or projects that you’re looking forward to?

I started writing new music straight after my last album was released, and right now we’re in the process of creating the graphic and estetic world for the next album. I am really looking forward to entering a sort of new era. This summer I’m also playing live at Lollapalooza in Paris for the first time. I’m really looking forward to that.
