We Are Story Tellers

Spotlight - Karli June

Spotlight – Karli June. We got the chance to sit down with Karli recently to chat about her newest project Feel Like Home and what it took to get it off the ground. Check out what makes Karli tick in this great chat.

What started your musical journey?

Singing in church! I was really lucky to have grown up in a church with an incredible music director who really encouraged me and gave me opportunities to sing from a young age!

Who are some of your inspirations in music today?

I really look up to Carrie Underwood a lot. I love her sound, what she writes about, and overall, how she has balanced her family life and her career.

Your new release “Feel like Home” FT. Ryan Langdon is coming out soon. Can you give the readers a little glimpse at the story behind it?

This song is about the feeling of a small town in the country – and finding love that gives you that same warm feeling! I always love the familiar rush of pulling down the gravel road to my parent’s farm – and that was the inspiration for this song!

How did Ryan come on board with this one?

We were looking for the right voice to pair with mine and Ryan was a name we had tossed out! We pitched the song to him and he loved it right away. It all happened really smoothly. I love having him part of it!

What is your process like when putting together a track like this one?

We (Gavin Slate and I) wrote the song a couple of years ago over Zoom, we then did a demo to get an idea of what the track could be, we pitched it to the right male voice, and once we decided on Ryan we recorded my vocals in Nashville and Ryan did his vocals in Toronto. So we didn’t actually record the vocals at the same time which a lot of people ask me about!

How do you think you have evolved as an artist since coming on to the scene and experiencing the things you have so far?

I have spent a lot of time working on my craft. I work with a vocal and performance coach who has really helped me gain a new sense of confidence. Over the years I have really found myself in my music as well. I think that is starting to come through more and more with each song I release.

Your name has been popping up all over the place recently. How has it been with the rise in your fame?

Thank you! That means a lot. I certainly don’t see myself that way, but I am grateful for each and every opportunity. I never want to take anything for granted! I want to keep being my best each day working hard and just doing what I feel I am made to do here on earth.

What do you do to keep yourself grounded in the fast paced world of music?

I spend a little alone time each morning with God. My faith gives me perspective on why I am doing this and encourages me during the ups and downs. It can be a really tough industry to be part of so having people around that love you for you is also really important. I am so grateful to have a wonderful, supportive husband and family who really helped me as well.

Is there any advice you could give to young artists trying to get past some difficult points in music?

First off, I feel you. This is not an easy journey! One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was to always look for the lesson. If you have a bad show, what did you learn? If you didn’t get the opportunity you wanted. There’s probably a better one around the bend. Keep learning and growing every step of the way and you will get there.

What is something you think should be asked more in an interview scenario that isn't asked enough?

What would you do if you didn’t do music?

Who plays you in the movie of your life?

Carrie Underwood. Is that too big of a get? (haha).

It’s always interesting to hear what someone's last meal would be. What’s yours?

Some sort of Thai food. I love coconut curry!

What’s something on your go to playlist that people wouldn’t expect you to listen to?

Trooper! I love my Canadian Rock Bands.

What do you hope people take away from your music?

I hope it makes them feel at HOME!

Last but not least, are you happy?

I am very happy. I don’t feel happy in every single moment of life because that is just not real – but I feel fulfilled and joyful about life!!

Spotlight – Karli June is a wrap! Thanks to the team at Strut for putting this together!
