Spotlight – Kyra Daniel
Welcome, Kyra. For those who are new to you can you give us a brief intro about you and your music?

Thank you and yes! I’m Kyra, and I’m from Kingston, Ontario Canada, I just turned 13 in September, and I am a singer/songwriter. I have 2 singles out so far, one called “Like it’s Summer” and also “Words Mean Something” both of which I co-wrote. I went to Nashville in December 2021 to write an EP with Evan Cline, and to this day is one of my favorite experiences I have had.

What was your inspiration for getting into music?

I loved watching Disney movies as a young child. I idolized the princesses (specifically Rapunzel, Elsa, and Tiana) and I wanted to be just like them. I think Frozen was the movie that first sparked my interest and passion for music. It was ‘Let it Go’ – I would sing it everywhere and one day, I asked my mom and dad to put me in singing lessons, and here we are now!!

I am curious about what artists you look up to and hope to be like someday.

I think one of my biggest inspirations has to be Beyoncé. Her confidence, her talent, and her live performances, just made me love to watch her. Another artist who I love and who has inspired me is Whitney Houston. Her voice is like nothing I’ve ever heard before, and she truly tells a story every time she sings.

One of my favorite things to know is about your process when putting together music. Everyone has their own way to craft a track and I’d love to know more about yours.

My songwriting process varies depending on multiple things: where I’m writing, what I’m writing about, and who I’m writing with. When I’m alone, I tend to write based on things I’ve gone through, or even events that happened earlier that day. When I’m writing with someone else though, I try to make the songs really relatable and empowering! All my songs tend to start with a messy journal page in bullet points, which leads to finding a few rhymes, thinking of a beat, and bringing the song to life.

You have a new single Words Mean Something and I’m curious what the story is behind it.

Words Mean Something is based on personal experiences I’ve gone through. Being made fun of at school for my hair, my skin color, and the fact that I love to sing. I wanted to write a song that would empower others to use their voice in times when they may feel alone because that is what really helped me through those hard times.

How do you think this track has evolved from the previously released Like Its Summer?

Like it’s Summer is a super upbeat song about having fun with your friends and family during one of my favorite times, aka summertime! With Words Mean Something, I wanted to have a more meaningful message that could hopefully inspire others to use their voice and learn how to love themselves.

Being someone younger in the industry what are your thoughts on how the music scene looks right now?

I think that the music industry can be a really tough thing to get into, but with the right mindset, big dreams, and a strong passion, I can do anything I put my mind to!!

You’ve got a couple of singles under your belt right now but are there plans for a larger project in the works?

As of right now, yes! Lots of writing sessions, interviews, videos, and a few more Nashville trips in the near future – and more songs to come from this first EP! Can’t wait to take you along on this journey with me!

I like to ask a few fun questions to everyone to find out more about personalities so the first one for you is what is something on your go-to playlist that you are listening to that people wouldn’t expect?

People look surprised when I tell them what I listen to for my age. Once I discovered the music that my parents were listening to, I immediately fell in love! Songs like Full Moon by Brandy, make it Happen by Mariah Carey, all the way to Die Hard by Kendrick Lamar. My playlist is very much all over the place!!

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given so far?

To stay focused, humble, and kind through everything and anything I go through in life. I have and always will keep those words with me as inspiration and a reminder to be who I really am.

If you could have any collab on a track, who would it be and why?

Beyoncé for SURE. She’s my idol, and I would literally cry if I ever got to collab with her. Big dreams!! Also, I am a HUGE Drake fan and would love to make a record with him!

Lastly and probably the most interesting question, why is music important to you and makes you want to go down this road?

I always thought of music as a second language for me. If I can’t express something in words, my first instinct would always be to write a song about it. This has not only made me feel better when I’m going through hard times but really showed me how much my passion grows for music every single day. I love it so much, and I hope if you ever get a chance to listen to my songs, you will feel just as inspired as I was when I wrote them!!
