Welcome, Kyra. For those who are new to you can you give us a brief intro about you and your music?
Thank you and yes! I’m Kyra, and I’m from Kingston, Ontario Canada, I just turned 13 in September, and I am a singer/songwriter. I have 2 singles out so far, one called “Like it’s Summer” and also “Words Mean Something” both of which I co-wrote. I went to Nashville in December 2021 to write an EP with Evan Cline, and to this day is one of my favorite experiences I have had.
What was your inspiration for getting into music?
I loved watching Disney movies as a young child. I idolized the princesses (specifically Rapunzel, Elsa, and Tiana) and I wanted to be just like them. I think Frozen was the movie that first sparked my interest and passion for music. It was ‘Let it Go’ – I would sing it everywhere and one day, I asked my mom and dad to put me in singing lessons, and here we are now!!
I am curious about what artists you look up to and hope to be like someday.
I think one of my biggest inspirations has to be Beyoncé. Her confidence, her talent, and her live performances, just made me love to watch her. Another artist who I love and who has inspired me is Whitney Houston. Her voice is like nothing I’ve ever heard before, and she truly tells a story every time she sings.
One of my favorite things to know is about your process when putting together music. Everyone has their own way to craft a track and I’d love to know more about yours.
My songwriting process varies depending on multiple things: where I’m writing, what I’m writing about, and who I’m writing with. When I’m alone, I tend to write based on things I’ve gone through, or even events that happened earlier that day. When I’m writing with someone else though, I try to make the songs really relatable and empowering! All my songs tend to start with a messy journal page in bullet points, which leads to finding a few rhymes, thinking of a beat, and bringing the song to life.
