What got you started in music?

When I was about eight years old my dad introduced me and my brother to the guitar. We fell in love with playing and with the magic of music. As I got older I started becoming fascinated with the art of writing because of artists like Ed Sheeran. My brother was also making music by that time so I had all of this inspiration around me that made me start. I think I was about fourteen when I started writing. From that point on making songs became my favourite thing to do and I started really shaping my craft and becoming serious about it before long. I think I was in grade ten when I knew it was going to be my career!

Who are some of the out of the box people who help influence your sound?

I would say my brother Dawson Gamble is the biggest out of box influence for my sound. He is an incredible writer and artist, growing up together being musicians has definitely pushed us to be better in this art form. Another one for me would have to be Mk.gee. I love listening to an artist who keeps me on my toes and always has me guessing at whats going to happen next. I always feel something like that when listening to his music and it inspires me to push boundaries within my songs.

Your new single Faces is coming up next. What the story behind this piece?

Usually the stories behind writing my songs are quite anti-climactic. I never really sit down and try to write a song, I find myself only forcing it when attempting to do that. I always love to wait until an idea strikes me, or until I am inspired by something. In this case I had an idea to write a song about a character with a great sense of mystery to her, always leaving the writer wondering where he stands in the relationship. I usually either write from experience or create a story and put myself in someone elses shoes, and Faceswas the latter in this case. Me and my brother also fully produced this song together which was something we are very proud of and a great addition to the story of this song for sure!

Do you have any interesting things you like to in your creation process?

I love to be alone! I have definitely written some amazing songs while working with other people but Id almost always prefer to work in solitude. I feel like my writing is at its best when Im not under pressure by others and I can take my time, write what I want. There is also an unspoken feeling of competition when working with people on a song that I dont really gravitate towards.

You are gearing up to have a show at the legendary Horseshoe Tavern. What can people expect from your show?

People can expect a great time and new music! Im so excited for this show because it will be the first time I get to play Faceslive along with the rest of my set. There is always something special about playing an unreleased song to a crowd and gaging their response to it. Me and my band have also worked hard on the rest of our set and we are ready to put on a great show!

Your live performances, like 'BACKINTOWN', have a raw and intimate vibe. How do you translate that energy into your studio recordings?

I think there is always some level of a live soundyou want to bring to the studio when recording. Making recordings clean and polished for a release is always nice, but adding raw elements of a live band sound is something Ive really been gravitating towards with my music for the last couple of years. I constantly feel that when playing live shows, there is something so intimate about a performance and how your songs sound live that you want to bring to the studio!

How do you approach balancing vulnerability and confidence in your songwriting and performances?

This is such a great question. I suppose I would say displaying vulnerability through songwriting is what shows true confidence. To bare all of your emotions in a song and write about something you are going through in such an honest way is not an easy thing to do, but once youve done it its such a freeing feeling and it allows you to own it. I feel most confident when Im singing an emotional song that is so true to my experiences, and I think a listener can relate to it more when Im being vulnerable. With performances, I would say the same thing. To be on stage in front of people singing intimate songs about my life makes me feel so secure, showing people who I am and what I can do through this art form is a great privilege.

How does your environment or hometown shape the themes and stories in your music?

As an artist, I think your environment shapes not only who you are as a person but how you grow with your songwriting. Ive had many experiences that Ive come out of with a great song, whether it was a heartbreak or just a great moment with the people around me writing about that nostalgia. Because of this making music has allowed me to fully understand that everything happens for a reason because if it didnt happen, maybe I wouldnt have wrote that song or experienced that growth. Its truly a beautiful thing to not only grow from something that happened to you, but turn your feelings about it into art.

How do you navigate artistic growth while staying true to the essence of your sound?

I feel like artistic growth and how my sound is being shaped go hand in hand. There have been many changes to how I go about my music over the years and all of those changes were made because I was growing as an artist. I try to always create what I want to and make what I want to make in that moment, and over time that has come together to form my sound. I love having no rules when making music, and I feel like my catalogue is a good representation of that.

What keeps you grounded outside of music?

My friends and my family. I know that whatever happens in my career, I will always have an incredible support system around me to remind me of what is truly important in this life. My goal is of course to achieve a great amount of success in this industry, but I would never want any of that to change me as a person. I am completely confident that because of the great people around me I will always be a grounded individual, regardless of the trajectory of my music.

If you were to compose a soundtrack for a movie about your life, what would the opening track sound like?

I would say something that reminds me of autumn! Fall is my favourite season so the opening scene would have to be in that season. I would probably make something acoustic and hope coresounding for that opening track to go with the vibe!

What is one thing you think should be asked more in an interview that isnt asked enough?

I wouldnt say I have too many complaints! I think its always so interesting to hear different peoples questions and what they ate curious about within an artist life. They are fun to answer and really make me think about things within this career path that I wouldnt have otherwise pondered.

If you had to introduce your music to a new fan for the first time what song do they listen to first and why?

Out of my current released music, I would say Hed Put Up a Fightfrom my debut EP would be a great place to start. I think this song displays a lot of my versatility by showcasing my writing abilities as well as my knack for a good melody! I would also say this song is not your averagetrack because of the interesting structure choices I made, not going the typical route of verse, chorus, verse, chorusand kind of just treating this song as a piece instead of a planned out thing. I think It also shows a great amount of vulnerability and emotion, which I want people to hear and know about me when listening to my music!

What motivates you to keep pursuing music?

Writing a great song, being in the studio, recording, being on stage, making music with my friends, meeting and working with amazing people, being on stagethe list goes on and on! Music is what I am most passionate about and truly what I love to do, and there are so many amazing people and opportunities Ive been blessed with because of it. There are way too many reasons for me to continue pursuing this career and surely a list that will only continue to grow.

What are some of the next milestones you plan to hit?

Id love to play some bigger shows and put out a full album at some point. I dont really think about milestones too often though, I really like to take everything day by day with my music. I just think, if I keep doing what Im doing and Im proud of what Im making, and I like what Im making, then things will fall into place. Accolades, awards and achievements are all great but I will forever view them as the cherry on top. All I really want is for people to listen to my music and come to my shows. For people to hear what Im making and appreciate it. To see me on stage and want to come back again. I cant wait for all of it.
