How was the end of your Summer?

It was so much fun! We got to travel around quite a bit for shows and of course playing Boots and Hearts was a highlight of that!

You are dropping some great stuff all the time but today we are here to talk about Drunk Plans. Tell us the putting this one together?

Writing and recording this song has been so much fun. I wrote this one with Kelly Precott and Tori Tullier, who are incredible writers and artists in their own right. Right when we finished the song, we knew we had something special so I took it to my producer, Brad Hill, and it was off to the races from there. “Drunk Plans” definitely found its own direction pretty quickly when we got the band on it and I just love where this song landed.

The story in this song is one that more than a few people can probably vibe with. How personal is this one for you?

I am a serial planner haha! I am always cooking up some kind of plan, especially when I’m out and about. Whether it’s brunch or a trip, some plans you just have to know aren’t going to come to fruition when it’s made over a glass of wine and that’s where we pulled this song from.

Is there a lyric or verse in one of your songs that has a special hidden meaning to you? Could you share what makes it meaningful?

I would have to say the hook is the most relatable to me. “It’s just me and my heart, making drunk plans.” I am someone that always feels the need to tell the people I love that I love them. So I make a lot of decisions based on my heart versus my brain and I think we were able to approach that in a really fun way with this song.

Is there something outside of music that is a great help in your process for music?

Definitely my family. With the industry having so many ups and downs, having a constant support system in my family where I can go and be grounded has been a huge asset for me.

What’s a “non-country” artist or genre that unexpectedly inspires you, and how does it show up in your music?

I really love soul music. It’s so moving and I love hearing the vocal power in that genre. That’s something I’ve been really inspired by, from being in a soul choir. It’s taken me a while to figure out how I can incorporate pieces of that genre into my own music and I think with drunk plans we really let the vocal come through and all of the instruments are so complementary to each other. I’m just excited to continue exploring that fusion a bit more.

How do you see the role of female voices in country music evolving, and what message do you hope to convey through your music as part of that movement?

I think Female voices are really kicking the door down right now. There’s just such a high level of talent coming from female artists and it’s a super exciting time. I think the biggest asset for us right now is the individuality that is coming through and seeing success. For myself, I want to create music that I am passionate about and I think that in itself helps move the needle.

If you could create a “country music time capsule” to capture your journey so far, what three items would you include, and why?

Ooo, good question.

  • First item would be, the book of envelopes my sister and best friend gave me. It’s filled with letters to open for things like “your first top 40” or “when you feel like giving up.” To me it reflects the trajectory of following a dream to remember that the lows are what make the highs so incredible.
  • Second, would be the cassette tape I recorded for my grandparents when I was 10, off my little karaoke machine in my room. It was the first time I thought I was going to be a singer, no matter how bad that tape actually sounded haha
  • Third, my first guitar. I got it when I moved out to go to university and I wrote so many songs without a clue as to what I was doing. It was the catalyst in finding my own voice and what I wanted to say.
If you could score the soundtrack to your movie, what kind of themes would you draw on?

Ummmm, I think the themes from Pitch Perfect would be relatable to me. Starts out hopeful, then goes a little awry but at the end comes together and they have the performance of a lifetime. Does that sum it up? Haha!

How do fashion and style work to elevate you as an artist?

I think it’s a point of expression and can help you build on your branding to further set you apart. I’m in the process of learning how to sew because I am notorious for having an idea for an outfit and never being able to find it. I’ll let you know how that goes hah!

Hot topic, what are your thoughts on Beyonce and Post Malone's trips down the country road?

I think it’s great! It’s one of the fastest growing genres right now and I think that’s a pretty cool thing. I’m all for blending and bending genres and it’s an exciting time for that!

What are the next milestones you plan on completing?

I have a big list of goals, but in the immediate future it is to build up to the EP release and continue to grow on the momentum we’re creating right now! Drunk Plans has had a great first couple weeks so I hope to see that continue at streaming and radio!
