We Are Story Tellers

The Commodores in Tampa Florida - An Evening of Icons

On November 14th, inside the Hard Rock Casino Event Center in Tampa Florida, the room was transported back in time for an Evening of Icons, promising an unforgettable evening of classic hits from The Commodores, The Pointer Sisters, and The Spinners..

The Spinners

In matching white suits, The Spinners brought charisma, and an electric stage performance to Tampa. Matching choreography added to the performance value to each song, which was sung just like it was recorded decades ago. Their setlist included all of their hits: It’s A Shame, I’ll Be Around, Could It Be I’m Falling In Love, and my all time favorite Working My Way Back To You / Forgive Me Girl. They were full of life during the whole performance, garnering crowd performance in the form of hands in the air, sing-a-longs, and dancing in the aisles. The Spinners brought the class, in vocals and performance, showing that they can stand the test of time!

The Pointer Sisters

The legacy of The Pointer Sisters lives on. While Ruth Pointer may be the only living sister, she is not taking on this next chapter alone; her daughter, Issa Pointer, and granddaughter, Sadako Pointer now complete the trio. While Ruth may be seventy-eight years old, she exuded the same energy, vocal restraint, and dance moves as she did fifty years ago. I told my Mom who joined me at the show that I wanted to be Ruth Pointer when I am older, and she responded with “So do I!” Their setlist was nothing short of amazing, again like The Spinners, offering hit after hit. I’m So Excited had the whole room on its feet, dancing in the aisles once again. They offered a wide vocal range the setlist filled with: Jump (Original Mix), Slow Hand, Fire, He’s So Shy, and Neutron Dance. The Pointer Sisters were by far my favorites of the night and I’m hoping they come back to Tampa very soon!

The Commodores

Decked out in black and rhinestones, the legendary Commodores took the stage to close out the night. Loving the Commodores is dare I say, easy, like a Sunday morning. Their stage presence, like the other acts, is captivating and just oozes class. While their setlist was more subdued energy wise, all of the hits were played, highlights for me being: Easy, Lady (You Bring Me Up), and of course Brick House. Original member William King, showing his trumpet skills multiple times during the set. Crowd interaction was king with this band, vocalist James Dean Nicholas calling for all the ladies to make their way to the front, and once again the aisles on the floor were flooded with dancing. The crowd demographic may have ranged from twenty to eighty, but that did not stop every attendee from dancing the night away. This night of icons showed how music can truly transcend generations and hold the test of time. An Evening of Icons with The Commodores in Tampa Florida, The Pointer Sisters, and The Spinners was as they promised, an unforgettable evening of classic hits.
