We Are Story Tellers

Healing from the INSIDE, Screaming on the OUTSIDE: The Wreck's Performance in Columbus

In the summer of 2020, I found myself stuck in a loop of listening to the same songs by the same sounding artists, everything starting to blur together. Desperate for something different, I was once again mindlessly scrolling through Spotify when a gritty, emotional sound burst through my phone speaker. It was The Wrecks. Screaming, yearning, and intense, and in that moment, it felt like someone had finally put my restless emotions into music. As the years have gone by, The Wrecks have continued to speak to the side of me that wants to scream at the top of my lungs and survive heartbreaks and losses.

The Wrecks have always had a strong sense of identity both on social media and on stage. Over the past several months, maybe even the past year, they’ve teased new music and hinted at a new album. With every cryptic post, my excitement kept building, not just for the release itself, but because I knew it also meant a new tour was on its way. Now, the INSIDE : OUTSIDE Tour marks their biggest headlining tour yet, with stops stretching from the West Coast to the East Coast and everywhere in between.

Benjamin Carter and Quarters of Change Start off the Night

The opening acts, Benjamin Carter and Quarters of Change, set the tone for the evening with their high energy performances. From the moment he stepped on stage, Carter exuded a cool, calm, and collected vibe, effortlessly connecting with the crowd. He mentioned that this was his first time on tour ever and to be honest, I couldn’t even tell. His music carried an alternative feel, mixed with a touch of rock that made sense why the crowd loved him so much! Quarters of Change followed with a similar rock-driven sound that had much of the crowd falling for them by the end of their set. Their energy was magnetic and their performance only added to the growing anticipation in the room. Overall, the opening sets had me leaving with several new songs added to my playlists and a genuine excitement to see these guys again on their own headlining tours someday.

The Wreck's Long Awaited Moment

Right from the start, the Wrecks’s came out with an insane energy. Whenever bands come out with a high energy like that, you might expect things to taper off, but that wasn’t the case on Wednesday night. The four bandmates, Nick, Aaron, Schmizz, and Billy, had me head-banging and singing along with the crowd as I stood in the photo pit! It was clear they had been waiting for this moment just as much as we had.

One of the best parts of the show was interacting with the other fans. It was amazing to see longtime supporters who’ve been listening to The Wrecks for over a decade. You could tell by the way they sang every lyric like second nature and showed up wearing vintage merch. One piece was so iconic that Nick, the lead singer, actually shouted it out during the set. The sense of community in the crowd was something special. I never felt alone for a moment. There were so many head-bangers that had the us going absolutely wild. Honestly, I was surprised there wasn’t any moshing, but the band’s crowd work more than made up for it. During the final song, “Favorite Liar,” Nick, the lead singer, jumped into the crowd and split it right down the middle, walking all the way to the back. Everyone lit up with excitement at having Nick so close, within reach. The energy was unforgettable.

Their latest EP, INSIDE :, marks a significant shift in not just in their music, but in their personal journey as well. As a longtime fan, I’ve witnessed the evolution of their sound, the highs of their success, and the lows that tested their strength. This EP feels like a turning point to a healing journey that resonates with those who’ve been there through every era. My personal favorite track from INSIDE : is “I Didn’t Use To.” It’s a powerful testament to the journey of self-love, and it made me genuinely excited to experience it live, screaming the lyrics alongside others who truly understand.

The overall feel of the night was that this was something we had all been waiting for. It was a long-anticipated release of energy that was more than just a concert, it felt like a reunion. I’m hoping to catch them again later in the tour as near the end. With more dates spread across the U.S. and Canada, it’ll be easy to catch them in a city near you!
