We Are Story Tellers
Tokyo Police Club In Vancouver with a night brimming with bittersweet nostalgia and electrifying energy at The Commodore Ballroom. The Ontario rockers took to the stage for the first of two sold-out nights, determined to deliver a show of epic proportions. As they embarked on their final journey, fans were treated to an unforgettable experience that perfectly encapsulated the band’s dynamic legacy and their deep connection with the audience.
Before the show started, the excitement outside the venue was palpable. Fans were vibrating with joy, sporting vintage tour shirts dating back to 2007, a testament to their long-standing devotion. As we waited for the doors to open, I found myself swapping stories with other fans, reminiscing about our first encounters with Tokyo Police Club. For many, their breakthrough came through music videos that once ruled MuchMusic. Our conversations were abruptly interrupted by a surge of cheers from the front of the line. A signal that the moment we’d been awaiting had arrived. The doors swung open, and with them, the night’s magic was about to unfold.
Opening the evening were Toronto’s own Born Ruffians, whose indie rock vibes seamlessly set the tone for the night. From the moment they took the stage, their infectious hooks and rhythmic grooves had fans dancing. The energy was electric, as the band’s vibrant performance ignited an unexpected wave of enthusiasm from the crowd. One of the highlights of their set was their playful nod to nostalgia, with a humorous shout-out about their origins dating back to the MySpace era. The combination of their dynamic stage presence and the crowd’s exuberant response created a lively and memorable start to an unforgettable night.
Before the night, I was new to Born Ruffians, but by the drive home, I was hooked and hoping for their return to Vancouver. Their energetic set left a lasting impression on The Commodore Ballroom. As the final notes faded and the lights dimmed, anticipation for Tokyo Police Club’s headlining set soared, promising an electrifying continuation of the evening.
Rapturous screams and cheers filled the air, as fans made sure Tokyo Police Club felt the love on this bittersweet night. Although the night was in sadness as one of the final shows of their career, it was also cemented as a celebration of their remarkable journey.
To kick off this crucial show, Tokyo Police Club chose “Favourite Colour,” a song brimming with catchy lyrics and dynamic energy, setting the stage for an unforgettable night. From the start, it was evident the band was ready to go out with a bang, delivering each track with the exuberance of their early years. The crowd, a blend of long-time fans and newcomers, fed off the band’s electric vibe, making for a truly memorable experience.
With eight albums and a career stretching back to 2005, curating a setlist for their final shows must have been daunting, but Tokyo Police Club nailed it. Their extensive discography shone brightly as they played fan favourites like “Bambi,” “Frankenstein,” and “Nature Of The Experiment,” along with some unexpected gems “Not My Girl,” and “End of a Spark”.
A night this epic deserved not one, but two electrifying encores. The first, a thrilling rendition of the three-part “Argentina,” ignited a frenzy on the floor. The second featured arguably the band’s greatest hits, “Tessellate” and “Your English Is Good,” perfectly capping off a legendary career with a triumphant finale.
A standout moment of the night was the stunning rendition of “Tessellate,” which made two appearances on the playlist. The first, an unexpected acoustic version, was a refreshing surprise but initially left me uncertain. However, when the song reappeared during the encore in its full, original glory, it was a euphoric experience. The second performance was flawlessly executed, sparking pure joy and affirming its place as a highlight of the evening.
