We Are Story Tellers
Toro y Moi’s performance at the Danforth Music Hall was a masterclass in atmosphere, groove, and reinvention. Opening the night was Panda Bear, Noah Lennox’s sonic experimental rock outfit, which laced the venue’s walls with its signature kaleidoscopic sound and eclectic visuals. The set was a true trip—swirling harmonies, warped samples, and hypnotic loops creating an otherworldly experience that primed the audience for what was to come. The energy in the room built steadily, setting the stage for an immersive night of genre-blending brilliance.
When Toro y Moi took the stage, their setup immediately stood out—four members arranged in a circle, facing each other, while Chaz Bear bounced freely around the front of the stage, which was littered with lights. Unlike the usual dimly lit indie show, the whole room remained fairly bright, casting a dreamlike glow over the crowd of indie and pop lovers. The set kicked off with a deep dive into the past, running it back to 2011 with tracks from Underneath the Pine, a move that instantly connected with longtime fans. Toro y Moi has always been a master of reinvention, effortlessly blending electronic, funk, and indie rock into a sound that feels both nostalgic and forward-thinking, and this setlist reflected that balance beautifully.
While older hits transported the audience to the early days of chillwave, newer material proved just as captivating. Of all the fresh tracks, “Tuesday” sparked the most energy, its groove-heavy pulse igniting a wave of movement across the crowd. Despite the deep sense of nostalgia woven throughout the performance, nothing about it felt forced or overly sentimental—Toro y Moi’s ability to refresh and reinterpret their sound kept things engaging from start to finish. As the final notes rang out, the room buzzed with the kind of excitement that lingers long after the last song, a testament to an artist who continues to evolve while staying true to the essence of their music.
