We Are Story Tellers
Wallows In Vancouver was a mesmerizing spectacle to remember that left concert-goers in a euphoric, dream-like trance. In celebration of their newly released album “Model”, Wallows brought the aptly named Model Tour to Doug Mitchell Thunderbird, performing a wide variety of Indie/Alternative hits. The night began with a brilliantly immerse set from New Zealand artist BENEE.
From the moment BENEE hit the stage, she was a tour de force, bursting with vibrant energy and a captivating charm that immediately engaged the audience and inspiring them to dance out of their seats. BENEE’s setlist was nothing short of spectacular, showcasing a dynamic range of her music featuring the likes of “Wishful Thinking”, “Glitter”, and the surprise unreleased gem “Sad Boii”. The performance reached its pinnacle with her viral hit “Supalonely”, a track that had the audience screaming along with every lyric. Overall, If a single word could capture BENEE’s performance, it would be ‘wow’, perfectly setting the stage for the rest of the night.
As the lights fade to darkness, a beam of light pierces through a large dark curtain and the ambient sounds of instruments set the mood. A silhouette emerges on stage, and as the figure begins to sing, with an unmistakable voice it becomes clear that it’s lead vocalist Dylan Minnette. The band sets the tone for the evening by opening the show with an introspective and slower track, “Do Not Wait”. The song is cut rather short as Wallows methodically launches into “Your Apartment” and instantly, the audience leaps from their seats and erupts into a frenzy of singing and dancing.
The performance was a testament to the seamless synergy between frontman Dylan Minnette, Bassist Braeden Lemasters and Drummer Cole Preston’s collective energy and chemistry, as it perfectly harmonized with the crowd’s powerful intensity. The concert was filled with numerous standout moments. Highlights include the fans’ ecstatic reactions to Minnette removing his hoodie to reveal his muscles and a tank top, a backdrop glowing vibrant red and white in celebration of Canada, and the live debut of their new track “Canada”.
However, one moment stood above all. In the latter part of the performance, Wallows moved through the crowd to a second more intimate stage, dressed with lamps, chairs; it set the scene for a special, more personal experience. There, the band invited a young woman from the crowd onto the stage. Just as they were about to serenade her, she playfully quipped, “Just so you know, I’m a lesbian” eliciting a burst of laughter from the audience, band, as well as myself making it a highlight of the evening.
Wallows extensive 25 track setlist was filled with crowd pleasers such as “Remember When”, “Scrawny”, “Pleaser” alongside new tracks “Anytime, Always”, “A Warning” and “She’s an Actress”. As the concert neared its end, the band’s exit from stage ignited a wave of fervent applause from the audience, a crescendo of enthusiasm ultimately called the band back for an encore. The crowd’s excitement reached a fever pitch as the band launched into their smash hit “Are You Bored Yet?”, followed by “Only Ecstasy”, a track perfectly encapsulating fans’ exhilarated feelings towards the night’s performance.
With that, Wallows incredible night in Vancouver reached its final moments. Walking back to my car, I couldn’t help but notice the waves of fans around me, visibly moved and still buzzing from the experience. Many were exclaiming their overwhelmed feelings with “This was the greatest night of my life”.
