We Are Story Tellers
Zara Larsson in NYC closed out her Venus US Tour with a stop at Webster Hall.. Larsson was accompanied on stage by an all female band and a troupe of female dancers. The entirely women dominated stage provided a sense of femininity and girl power throughout the performance. Although Larsson had four professional dancers supporting her, she did a lot of dancing herself as well and looked to be having a lot of fun performing. Not only did the singer show off her impressive dance moves, she was also quite charismatic in her banter with the crowd and interaction with her fans. The venue was packed with fans who knew every one of her lyrics. During one of Larsson’s songs, she was given a fluffy blue cowboy hat by a fan in the front row that had been personalized to say “Zara Larsson” on the front and “Venus Tour” on the back, Larsson proudly received the hat and had fun wearing it for the remainder of the song. Other than her new feathered accessory, the singer rocked a cropped version of an iconic “I ‘heart’ NY” t-shirt along with some bedazzled shorts and sparkly tights.
Recently, a trend has become widespread that involves social media users posting videos depicting dolphins jumping through water in bright, happy, Lisa Frank-style waters while obscure, often self-loathing and depressing messages are written over the scenes. For some reason, this trend is specifically linked to Zara Larsson’s song with Clean Bandit, “Symphony”. Behind the stage, a large screen displayed engaging visuals throughout the night, so Larsson embraced the confusing trend by projecting similar dolphin videos during her performance of the song. It was an incredibly apt and hilarious reference that let her fans know that she is more than happy to play into the meme and that she is not at all put off by the nature of the posts her song is involved in.
The setlist contained a mix of some new music and some older hits. Songs like “I would like”, “Never forget you”, “Symphony”, “Ain’t my Fault”, and “Lush Life” stuck out to me as some of her biggest numbers. After a more mellow song from Larsson’s setlist, she mentioned that fans had an opportunity to donate to help support abortion rights as they were making purchases at the merch table.
The overall production value of this show was fantastic. I was thoroughly entertained and engaged throughout the night. From the hair flips and body rolls to the sweet fan interactions, Zara Larsson in NYC and she knows how to perform and I look forward to her return to the US in the future.
