Ottawa Jazzfest 2026 Day 4 Ft. Hiromi’s Sonicwonder

After three days of shifting weather, Day 4 of the Ottawa Jazz Festival finally arrived under clear skies. With sunshine overhead and barely a cloud in sight, festivalgoers packed Confederation Park for what felt like one of the most anticipated evenings of the festival. Featuring two internationally acclaimed pianists from different generations of jazz, the night showcased both the genre’s rich history and its ever-evolving future.

Bob James

Opening the evening was jazz legend Bob James, whose remarkable career now spans more than six decades. Accompanied by a two other musicians, James filled Confederation Park with a sound that felt far larger than the number of players on stage. His piano playing was effortless and captivating, while bassist Michael Palazzolo danced across the fretboard with astonishing precision and creativity.

The performance balanced sophistication and accessibility, drawing the audience into a soothing set that highlighted why James remains one of the most influential figures in modern jazz. By the end, a standing ovation from the crowd served as a fitting tribute to a career that continues to inspire generations of musicians.

Hiromi’s Sonicwonder

By the time Hiromi’s Sonicwonder took the stage, the festival grounds were full. Where Bob James had delivered elegance and restraint, Hiromi arrived with a whirlwind of energy, colour, and sonic exploration.

 

Joined by Adam O’Farrill on trumpet, Hadrien Feraud on bass, and Gene Coye on drums, Hiromi led the audience through many of her songs. One stand out moment was when the four-part suite from her latest album, OUT THERE. The performance blended dazzling piano work with layers of synthesizers, creating a sound that felt expansive, cinematic, and completely immersive. Every member of the band contributed to the experience, weaving together jazz, fusion, funk, and electronic textures with remarkable chemistry.

 

Throughout the set, Hiromi’s boundless enthusiasm was matched by her technical brilliance. Moments of explosive intensity gave way to passages of breathtaking beauty, with the interplay between synth and piano creating some of the evening’s most memorable moments. Under the clearest skies of the festival so far, Sonicwonder delivered a performance that felt both adventurous and deeply emotional, captivating the audience from beginning to end.
