Spotlight – Women of S.A.C.

Today is Spotlight – Women of S.A.C. We got to chat with S.A.C. Operations Coordinator Natalie Bogdanovic about the organization and this upcoming event.

How did you get involved with the Songwriters Association of Canada?

I’ve been involved with S.A.C. for about 8 years now. I started as an event intern then event coordinator. I’m now involved in the operations of the organization that oversee events and programs. In my time here, I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing the association grow and also adapt with the ever-changing landscape of the Canadian music community. I have had the opportunity, with the S.A.C., to work with incredible and also influential leaders of the industry who are fighting tirelessly every day for creator rights on a national and international level.

Can you speak about what the organization does?

The S.A.C. is a friendly community of songwriters and creators. They support each other in their creative journey through our advocacy efforts to protect the value of the work of a music creator. The S.A.C. exists to nurture, develop, and protect the creative, business, and legal interests of music creators in Canada and around the world.

With an all-female lineup, can you speak about the importance of raising and spotlighting female artists and voices?

It is part S.A.C.’s mandate and also policies to implement gender parity. This is across the Board of Directors, staff, association representatives, and across all programming and events, 100% of the time. It’s so important for women to be offered the same shots and at the same rate that men are since we make up half the population! S.A.C. is dedicated to continuing to provide these chances for women, transgender and gender non-conforming people through performance opportunities, song writing camps, and workshops.

What‘s the selection process like for the women highlighted?

The S.A.C. Celebration Series is an expansion of the Songbird North concert program. It was developed to represent inclusivity and also highlight a diverse membership and music creator community. For the Women of S.A.C. Celebration concert, we wanted to spotlight key Canadian creators. They are from across the country from different backgrounds, genres, and styles. We believe them to be strong ambassadors of S.A.C. with their voices in their own communities.

What‘s your favorite music-based memory?

There are so many to choose from here. All of which seem even sweeter now especially since we haven’t had the chance to experience live music in-person in over a year! I’ve been really missing the energy of festival season this year; Osheaga, Field Trip, Canadian Music Week, etc. A recent favourite memory was at S.A.C.’s Celebration Series Songbird North in honour of Black History Month in February. At this time we saw performances by Maestro Fresh-Wes, TiKA, NEFE, and Gary Beals. It’s the first virtual celebration concert we put on as an organization and it was amazing to see the community that formed despite not being able to gather in-person at an actual venue this year.

What are your favorite local, independent businesses to give a shout out to?

  • Women in Music Canada: Fostering gender equality in the music industry through the support and advancement of female identifying professionals and creatives at every stage of their career.
  • ADVANCE: Canada’s Black Music Business Collective. Leading the change in developing an infrastructure for the betterment, upliftment, and retention of Black people in the music business.
