This Week in Music – July 11th
Any of you readers remember Napster? Well if you are old enough to remember this program and the legal battles that stemmed from it. It was this week in music, on this day, in 2000 where Lars Ulrich from Metallica became the first witness to testify at a U.S Senate hearing over copyright law issues.
Napster was one of the first ever music file sharing services and many musicians felt as if they were losing out on some revenue.
Listeners would not necessarily need to go out and buy albums anymore since it was free to download online.
Canadian R&B artist Alessia Cara turns 23 today.
She was born in Brampton, Ontario Canada and continues to make a whole country proud.

Not sure who the Gin Blossoms are? I’d bet my last dollar that you have heard at least one of their songs if you grew up in the 90’s.
The band doesn’t get the credit they deserve in my opinion. Terribly underrated.

It was on this date on in 1973 that Queen released their self-titled album in the UK, on EMI records.
This album may not have been their best or most popular work, but the world was introduced to the hit making, music changing band named Queen.

Sadly on this date back in 1973, The Everly Brothers announced that had broken up.
Nobody fights like brothers, and it showed on this fateful night in Hollywood.
Don Everly had shown up drunk and his brother Phil had enough.
He smashed his guitar over Don’s head and announced that they would never perform together again. (Until 1983 more specifically, but that is just hindsight)
Happy birthday to folk legend Woody Guthrie who would have turned 107 if he were still alive today.
He passed away back in 1967 at the age of 55. One of the most famous songs we had written is “This Land Is Your Land” which he wrote as a response to the overplaying of the song “God Bless America.”
July 15th
On this date in 2006, Canadian Punk Princess Avril Lavigne married Canadian Punk singer Deryck Whibley of Sum 41.
Marriage didn’t last long unfortunately.
Happy Birthday to Ray Toro, former guitarist for My Chemical Romance, who turns 42 today.
