Why do birds suddenly appear this week in music? Probably because The Carpenters released the song Close to You on this date back in 1970. Am I the only one who thinks of The Simpsons when they hear this song?

May 16th
On this date back in 1966, The Beach Boys released one of the greatest albums of all time. Pet Sounds made Time Magazine’s top album of all time but oddly enough is only certified Gold due to some missing statistics. Most would agree that this album is more than likely double platinum.
Happy Birthday to the youngest Jackson of the Jackson clan. Janet is still looking stunning at the age of 53.
May 17th
The Queen of Disco succumbed to lung cancer on this date in 2012.
Despite being mostly a non-smoker, Donna Summer lost her battle to cancer at the young age of 63.
It was on this date in 1958 that original lead singer, Paul Di’Anno of Iron Maiden was born. The Beast turns 61 today.
This Week in Music – May 18th
It was on this date way back in 1959 that Chubby Checker debuted on the charts for the first time with his song The Class.
It blew my mind when I realized that the name Chubby Checkers, is a play on the name Fats Domino.
Singer, guitarist and professional surfer Jack Johnson was born in Hawaii on this date back in 1975. He turns 44 today.
May 19th
On this date back in 1965, the FBI began investigating the lyrics to Louie Louie by The Kingsmen. The investigation began after a parent wrote a letter to Robert Kennedy complaining that the lyrics were obscene.
Oddly enough, the FBI interviewed the members of The Kingsmen, but the thought never occurred to them that they should be consulting the songs creator, Richard Berry as well.
Another hero of mine was born on this date back in 1951.
Joey Ramone of the Ramones would have been 68 today if he hadn’t sadly passed away at the age of 49 back in 2001.
May 20th
The biographical film, The Buddy Holly Story starring Gary Busey, premiered in Buddy Holly’s hometown of Lubbock Texas on this date in 1978.
It also debuted in Gary Busey’s home town of Tulsa Oklahoma.
Cherilyn Sarkisian LaPierre, better known simply as Cher, was born on this date in 1946.
Not sure how many more farewell tours she has left in the tank, but she turns 73 today.
This Week in Music – May 21st
It was on this date in 1980 that Punk legend Joe Strummer of the Clash was arrested for smashing his guitar over the head of an audience member in Germany. I really wish there was footage available online of this event, but sadly I couldn’t find any.
Say what? Singer/songwriter Leo Sayer turns 71.
