This Week in Music – May 15th

The Carpenters
The Carpenters

Why do birds suddenly appear this week in music? Probably because The Carpenters released the song Close to You on this date back in 1970. Am I the only one who thinks of The Simpsons when they hear this song?

On this date back in 1966, The Beach Boys released one of the greatest albums of all time. Pet Sounds made Time Magazine’s top album of all time but oddly enough is only certified Gold due to some missing statistics. Most would agree that this album is more than likely double platinum.

It was on this date way back in 1959 that Chubby Checker debuted on the charts for the first time with his song The Class.

The Kingsmen
The Kingsmen

On this date back in 1965, the FBI began investigating the lyrics to Louie Louie by The Kingsmen. The investigation began after a parent wrote a letter to Robert Kennedy complaining that the lyrics were obscene.

Oddly enough, the FBI interviewed the members of The Kingsmen, but the thought never occurred to them that they should be consulting the songs creator, Richard Berry as well.

Another hero of mine was born on this date back in 1951.
